Julia Cook is a former teacher and school guidance counselor. She is the recipient of several book awards including the AEP (Association for Educational Publishers) Distinguished Achievement Award and the Mom's Choice Award. The goal behind Julia's books is to actively involve readers into her creative stories and teach them to become "better." Inspirations for her books come from working with children and carefully listening to parents and teachers.

It was like now that you have cancer everyone around you is ...

My 5 year old son was recently diagnosed with leukemia and we wanted to get a couple of books to help explain some of the challenges he would be facing. We were encouraged by the title of this book and the cover. Well the old adage is true, don't judge a book by it's cover. This book was so uterrtly disappointing! There was nothing "can do" about it. It was like "now that you have cancer everyone around you is going to be sad, crying or depressed". The only solution it gave for dealing with the cancer was to think about a time that the kid didn't have cancer. Sorry but that is not how I want my son to deal with his illness. Cancer sucks and its not fair but I am not going to have my son spend the next 3 years thinking about when he didn't have cancer when things are hard. We plan on making lots of good new memories even with cancer and I am strong enough to keep my emotions in check when I am around him. This book really bothered me. Get- His for Hair Fairy instead.
