Review
A book that changed my life."Nikos Salingaros' work engages and dwells on a scientific platform calling for the adoption of a more flexible frame of vision to widen our scope from the aesthetics (and economical) aspect, to encompass society and the problems that our world is facing on a global scale. His book is a call for action, to the many challenges that are being experienced, but that we have yet to concretely address. He creates a new level of system thinking that transcends disciplines and time." -- Zaheer Allam.

From the Author
I taught a course on architectural theory, organized so that external students could follow much of it online from wherever they were located. Even those students who had no access to the two textbooks could still learn a great deal about the basic concepts from my notes summarizing the reading material. Altogether, this material represents a new and ultimately more intelligent approach to understanding architecture. My Weekly Lecture Notes included here summarize and comment on the principal arguments from the reading assignments, further clarified in our class roundtable discussions. The focus was on a Unified Architectural Theory, which includes and describes all of architecture, from traditional buildings to the latest design trends currently in fashion. More importantly, this comprehensive theoretical framework is based upon science and not on personal opinion. The theory is testable and has predictive value. The unified theoretical framework is practical, original, entirely general, and applies directly to cutting-edge design. Students by the end of the course could judge what makes a "good" building, not only for its adaptation to human use, but also from the point of view of being able to learn something from it. Is it functional and emotionally satisfying, and does it contribute to elevating the quality of life of its users? (From the Preface).

From the Back Cover
We are on the threshold of a new way of thinking about, learning, and practicing architecture. Ready to abandon design based on often-irrelevant images for a more meaningful paradigm, we find answers in combining timeless truths with recent scientific results. These explain how architecture can re-attach itself to nature. "'Unified Architectural Theory' is not theory at all. It is evidence. It lets us see how until recently we have always designed and built. We've built buildings and spaces and towns that reflect the order in our genes, in the biological world we're part of. We've felt at home in them because their order makes space for our body and our soul. Now we rediscover how to build a world that does not alienate us from who we are, a world that gives us joy, a world that brings us home." -- Dr. Ir. Jaap Dawson, Technical University Delft. "The information that I have learned in this one class has been more important than almost all the rest of my classes combined." -- Jacob LeMieux, University of Texas.

Enlightening!
By Damien Francois
This brilliant “Theory of Architecture” is more than a cultural theory of how we inhabit physically Planet Earth -- our abode, the only one we have. It is a theory of civilization, hence, it is about ethics and morals. Prof. Salingaros demonstrates clearly what has gone wrong in architecture in modern times. His analysis is extremely clear because it is based on common sense, the antipodes of modernistic architecture -- and its “theory” -- which makes people sick. This is not a metaphor: Prof. Salingaros proves that we are increasingly surrounded by a built environment that makes humans sick -- and costs a lot of money, unnecessarily. This masterpiece of scientific and intellectual clarity has been conceived by the author as an introduction to the work of Christopher Alexander, his friend and teacher. I cannot wait to dive into the work of Christopher...

Complex title but compelling ideas!
By Barbara Stewart
Architects and Designers who read Christopher Alexander's "architectural Bible" Pattern Language and found it thought-provoking and touching, but questioned its relevance outside custom single-family-home design (like I did), should read Unified Architectural Theory. It's fascinating. Nikos Salingaros combines current research from Biophelia and Modern Science with a deep understanding of the trends in the architectural design world that have brought us where we are today - to a world of twisting toppling-looking buildings where great thought is given to novelty and originality - but very little thought is given to how occupants actually feel about the buildings we create for them. Nikos identifies where we went 'off track' - and provides a compelling argument for why we should re-establish the design continuity that humans fostered for hundreds of years and only abandoned (for no apparent purpose) in the mid-20th century. The writing and concepts described are simpler and more easily understood than it's title!

Don't Bother With This One, Go Directly To The Christopher Alexander Originals
By J Ellis
As a longtime fan of the work of Christopher Alexander, I thought this might be of interest. I was disappointed to discover that this appears to be a mash-up of a course syllabus and some turgidly written lecture notes. Anybody wanting to explore Alexander should go directly to the source, perhaps A Pattern Language (1977), The Timeless Way of Bulding (1979), or his later series on The Nature of Order. They are admittedly pricey books, even used, but a far better choice than this rehash.
