Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian to English, and English to Hawaiian

I am a new Hawaiian language student, and this wonderful book allows me to look up words and definitions either from Hawaiian to English, or English to Hawaiian. I especially like this book because the font size makes it easy to read. I have visited Hawaii over 40 times in the last 32 years, and just wanted to be able to read and write the language. Now that I am retired, I have time to devote to perfecting my own use of the language and culture of my happy place. If you have simililar inclinations this book is a must.

I am very disappointment that the book is so old and worn out. Pages are yellowed and fragile and looks as though it could tear so easily. I knew it was "used" but I didn't think it would be this bad.

This dictionary was recommended by my hula teacher. I looked up some words, and the definitions were nice and clear. Dictionary was slightly damaged upon arrival because it was packed in a large box with another item. I requested for an exchange, and it arrived in 2 days. Dictionary was tightly packed, so it was in a perfect condition. I think all the book purchases should be packed this way. Thank you for the great service.

And it is not so great a wonder that this absurd opinion, and altogether contrary to nature, hath procured unto itself some little authority, seeing to that common disease of mankind (whereby, as vice, so we follow the defense thereof)1 the craft and subtlety of flatterers is added, whereunto all power is subject. But on the contrary part, in all ages there have been some wise and religious men (not of servile condition) who would pluck this persuasion out of the minds of simple men and convince the others, being defenders thereof, of impudency. For they declared God to be the creator and governor of the world, especially the father of the nature of man which, therefore not as other living creatures, he severed into divers kinds and divers differences, but would have them of one kind and to be contained under one name; and gave moreover the same beginning and the like composition of members, countenances turned each to other and speech also, and other instruments of imparting, that all might understand there was a natural society and kindred between them. And to this house or city built by him that great prince and householder had written certain laws of his, not in brass or tables, but in the minds and senses of everyone, where they shall offer themselves to be read of the unwilling and such as refuse. By these laws both high and low are bound. It is no more lawful for kings to transgress these than for the common people to impugn the decrees of senators, senators to resist the edicts of presidents, and viceroys the laws and statutes of their kings, for those very laws of people and all cities flowed from that fountain; thence they received their sanctimony and majesty. But as in man himself there are some things which are common with all, and other some whereby everyone is to be distinguished from other, so of those things which nature had brought forth for the use of man she would that some of them should remain common and others through every one’s labor and industry to become proper. But laws were set down for both, that all surely might use common things without the damage of all and, for the rest, every man contented with his portion should abstain from another’s.

It's mostly an essay on how the ocean belongs to no one nation, written in defense of what would be considered an act of piracy now that there are international courts and bodies governing the seas. Grotius simply tries to explain how no one man or nation can try to enforce ridiculous claims that no one else can legally sail where said person forbids. It would be a more convincing argument had he spent more time demolishing the basis for the claims for all rather than justifying the Dutch claims against Portugal's attempt to control all of the trade with Asia, from the right to sail upon the waters to interacting with the locals for trade. It's well written, but I think it lacks weight due to the limited subject upon which he talks.

ONE OF THE BEST!

O'Keeffe knows what he is talking about, no matter it's the street or the ring. The techniques are very practical and it cna give a kick boxing/Mugay Thai fighter a all rounded self defense manual. It also covers awareness, conditioning, strength training, mindsets, defend against multiple attackers, weapon defense (stay out of the knife stuff, most of them are not practical for the average guy, but it did address how dangerous the knife is. Also covers drills, training methods, escaping holds, pre emtive strikes, situational defense and one of the best thing about this book is that he does not covers only techniques, it talks about what do you need to look and pay attention to in a certain situation, the dangers of the situation, and lots of advices. Some of the bad advice is that putting your back against the wall in a multiple assilant situation will more likely get you killed. But use your own judegement, test teh technique under real pressure, have your partner really trys to make your technique fail! This book starts with a foreword by self protection pioneer Geofff Thompson and threat awareness, pre emtive strikes, basic strikes. It ends with teaching targeting, vital points, and a lsit of recommandation. Overall this is a great book and should be in any serious self defense practioner's libary.

"Combat Kick Boxing" is a very coherent self-defense manual on how to use special methods based on various kickboxing methods -- such as particular practical methods adapted from Western Kickboxing, Muy Thai and Savate. Pat O'Keeffe presents some great knee and elbow hard-hits adapted from Muy Thai -- that are well chosen to fit-in with the opponent's actual attack -- rather than just semi-randomly shot-out at the risk of not fiting-in -- therefore exposing one to the attacker due to knees and elbows being easier to read by the attacker than kicks or fists. This whole manual has great practical advice in context of self-defense usage -- such as encounter area awareness and repeating blows as necessary to disable attackers -- BUT getting away as soon as practical for both survival and legal reasons. Getting away as soon as possible usually means avoiding or breaking any attempted holds of attackers and NOT going into ground grappling with an attacker as there may be armed allies nearby as Pat O'Keeffe remarks upon a number of times.

Pat O'Keeffe does not mention Savate by name -- but presents some of its methods such as covert and overt On-Guards and sliding kicks, that travel as long as possible near the ground [for stealthy on-balance speed], before whipping-up into a well-chosen target -- and kicks that are whipped-up just as ones rear leg is grouped with the lead kicking leg [for stealthy on-balance power]. In particular, there are the lead leg front and side kicks on pages 44 and 49 -- that have defensive stop-hit and attacking hard-hit variants -- using immediate lifting for the stop-hits or hard-hit slide-ups ["group" in Savate]. The commmentary concerning these particular kicks about their further usage in context is great -- the front kick acting as a combination lead ["chain" in Savate] -- and the side kick usage for weapons-counters [allowing one to turn profile away from the weapon while countering with a hard-hit to lead into a hold or throw disarm]. Such holds and throws are adapted from classical Judo [even by name] -- as the author also has a Judo background +++

A fantastic book on using kick boxing techniques for practical street combat.

This is my personal favorite kick boxing book of the three written by Pat O'Keeffe. Since my primary interest today is practical combatives rather than tournament martial arts, I found this book to be very interesting and informative. The main focus of this volume is how to use the techniques of kick boxing for practical street combat scenarios. The author emphasizes that students should read his first book on kick boxing before trying to master the material in this text. I agree, but if you have a karate or combatives back ground you will still benefit greatly from reading this text.

There are fourteen detailed chapters in this volume. The material includes the importance of awareness, targets and techniques, the pre-emptive strike, breaking holds, one-to-one unarmed, blunt instrument attacks, knife attacks, gang attacks, seated defense, ground defense, and numerous other informative chapters.
Like his other kick boxing texts, this one is full of clear black and white photographs showing each technique. The focus of this fantastic book is the use of kicking boxing techniques as a superb method of street combat self-defense.

In conclusion, this is a book for martial artists and anyone else who is seeking a practical and highly effective system of street combat and self-defense.

Better Out Than In

I know, from reading all the other reviews, that I am not alone in my sincere appreciation for the work of Karol K Truman in composing the book "Feelings Buried Alive Never Die." But why did it take me so long to find it? I think this book is must-read, must-share, must-remember resource for living a healthy life. It stands above other books about the importance of feelings by its sheer volume of intriguing and useful information.

Feelings Buried Alive Never Die is a book that explains in 21 chapters how emotional health impacts physical health. This is something often overlooked and downplayed in mainstream medicine, even though there are countless scientific experiments (which she shares) that prove how the electrical current of your emotions affect the function of your organs and nervous system. In the first few chapters Karol explains what emotions, feelings, thoughts, and beliefs are - as well as how your childhood experiences develop these aspects of life. Too many of us suppress and bottle up our emotions without realizing that they will stick with us.

One unique section of her book is the "Probable Feelings Causing Illness" chart that covers over 200 ailments (like candidiasis, anxiety, and liver problems) with exercises to help you work through and release their related feeling.

These exercises are amazing. My favorite chapter, chapter 17, addresses feelings and beliefs that are related to success. In it, she matches negative feelings with positive scripts to read aloud to uplift your mood and put you in a space of confidence and self-love. As she says in the book, "It can literally take the slums out of you, and then you change your environment."

I truly believe that by earnestly practicing the principles in Feelings Buried Alive Never Die, a person can overcome their emotional baggage and achieve major healing. In the months around my wedding engagement I had a terrible mix of illness and depression all because I was scared that lust for a friend would ruin my marriage with my true love. Things were ugly :/ But, by learning how to identify and release my emotions, I experienced a miraculous recovery and lived through my engagement and wedding, happily, with both men in their rightful places in my life.

The bottom line is that the information on this book should be shared with everyone! It's a top ten book for me, absolutely. Strongly recommend this book!!!!! Got rid of 70 plus years of fears!!

Ordered at least 8 of these. Really great book. Found out why I was so fearful without knowing the cause. So much good info for adults and
especially for parents and how they treat their kids growing up. Can really get rid of baggage been carrying for 70 plus years. Feel so peaceful
now. Still have some more to work on but 85% is probably gone. Strongly recommend this book!!!!!

The power of thoughts/feelings

So often we have heard about self fulfilling prophecy...Never have I come across a tool (script) to help effect change in the thoughts that could address negative feelings manifested in the form of physical ailments in the body.

I have been seeing a shift within the medical community recently which has endorsed the belief that emotional pain/imbalances may in fact be the cause physical pain and disease.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to return to balance and wellness and who has already taken many of the traditional medical paths with little to no resolution.

Ethnic and sectarian turmoil is endemic to Iraq, and its armed forces have been intertwined with its political affairs since their creation. This study illustrates how the relationship between the military and the political centre in Iraq has evolved, with the military bringing about three regime changes in Iraq’s history before being brought under control by Saddam Hussein, up until the 2003 war. The instability that followed was partly due to the failure to create a new military that does not threaten the government, yet is still strong enough to deter rival factions from armed conflict. The reconstitution of the armed forces will be a prerequisite for an American withdrawal from Iraq, but this book argues that immense challenges lie ahead, despite the praise from the Bush administration for the progress of the new Iraqi army.

Definitive account of a misunderstood and stereotyped military

I have researched the Iraqi army for some time for a government publication on a related subject. During that research I have relied on many books as sources, to include those written by Mohammad Gholi Majd, Peter Sluglett, Gerald de Gaury, David Fromkin, Reeva Spector Simon, and Majid Khadduri's. All are excellent, but with the possible exception of Reeva Spector Simon's, they (of necessity) discuss the Iraqi army in a peripheral manner. Al-Marashi and Salama have focused their work squarely on the subject of the Iraqi military and do not deviate from that focus during the entire book. The relationships between the army, king, baath party, and Saddam are explained in crisp, clear, detail. Their account also includes little known facts about the Iraq-Iran war, to include the "de-politization" of the Army in the wake of the loss of the Al-Faw peninsula. All in all, an excellent account worth aquiring for personal or reference libraries. Highly recommended!

Grade 5-8. Meg Lowman is a scientist who has spent years studying the rain forest canopy. Lasky and Knight join her in the treetops of Belize to record the wonders of plant and animal life found more than 100 feet above the ground. Yet, this book is not simply another chronicle of rain forest ecology, although the exceptional full-color photographs document with clarity the teeming life to be found there. Lasky also explains the methods scientists use to conduct research in this environment, sometimes under extremely difficult circumstances. For example, to gather leaf samples in Cameroon, Lowman had to hang over the edge of an inflatable raft suspended beneath a dirigible. In Belize, she uses walkways high above ground and, for the first time, allows her young sons to join her in the canopy. The long hours the scientist devotes to her work are not minimized, but her love for her research is evident. Her story might encourage young women considering science careers. Lowman's reading to her sons at bedtime from Treasure Island and her private ruminations about Harriet Tubman seem a bit forced and extraneous, but they shouldn't discourage anyone from purchasing this unusual and effective book.?Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN

Gr. 3^-5. Lasky's unusually vivid introduction to the rainforest follows biologist Meg Lowman into the canopy to look at plants and animals. The director of research and conservation at a center in Florida, Lowman travels with her two young sons to a rain forest site in Belize. There she and her assistant climb into the canopy and perform their experiments. They inspect leaves eaten by insects, look at "ant gardens" in the treetops, and observe the activities of various insects and animals and their effects on plant life. Later, the scientist takes her sons on their first trip to the canopy and then for an evening nature walk on the forest floor. The narrative approach to nature study can be tedious, but Lasky's writing creates scenes and relates facts in ways that are vivid and memorable. Every page of this large-format book features colorful photographs that reflect the you-are-there quality of the text: long-range views of the forest, close-ups of individual species, and many pictures of Lowman and her sons, which have a natural, unstudied look. Fresh in outlook and intriguing in details, this book will strengthen any library collection on the rainforest. Carolyn Phelan

About the Author
Shelley C. Safian
Dr. Shelley C. Safian has been teaching Health Care Administration, Health
Information Management, and Medical Billing and Coding, both onsite and online, for
more than 15 years.
Safian writes a monthly Q&A column for the online publication JustCoding and
writes several articles each year on various aspects of coding. In addition, she is the
author of six textbooks. Her newest book, Foundations of Health Care Administration,
was released January 2014.
Safian is in her fourth year as the chair of the continuing education committee for
FHIMA (Florida Health Information Management Association). In the past, she has
served on several committees and practice councils on the national, state, and local
levels of the American Health Information Management Association.
She is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), a Certified
Coding Specialist (CCS-P), a Certified Professional Coder (CPC-H, CPC-I), and an
ICD-10-CM/PCS trainer.

WATCH DESCRIPTIONS WHEN ORDERING!

Watch the descriptions when ordering this book. The publisher only sells it as a paperback edition (ISBN 0078020719) and yet I have seen several looseleaf or binder editions. These have different ISBN's or are different books entirely.
