A Wonderful Tool For My Morning Prayer....

According to the back cover, this booklet of tear-out prayer cards came about because of the success of the prayers suggested in the original book, "The Power Of A Praying Wife." Evidently, faithful readers were scribbling the prayers on notepads or ripping them out of the book to keep them handy and so the author collected them in this booklet. I haven't read the original book; I just stumbled across the cards and, they being exactly what I needed, I bought them.
I have a morning prayer routine and I was looking for something to help me focus some of that time on my husband. Being new to prayer, I was hoping there was something more specific out there that I could be praying besides my general, "God, please take care of him and bless his day." THESE CARDS ARE GREAT! They're divided into subject: Me (His Wife), His Health, His Work, His Marriage, His Walk With God, His Purpose, His Talk, etc., and each one includes a bit of scripture at the bottom.
Yesterday's (to give you an example), from His Past, included: "Lord, wherever my husband's past has become an unpleasant memory, I pray You would redeem it and bring life out of it. Bind up his wounds (Psalm 147:3). Restore his soul (Psalm 23:3). Help him to release the past so that he will no live in it, but learn from it, break out of it, and move into the future You have for him."
My favorite section of prayers is the His Wife category in which the author suggests you pray to become a better wife; I pray one His Wife card every day as part of my rosary and then later randomly pick one other. An example? "Lord, help me to be a good wife. . . Take my selfishness, impatience, and irritability and turn them into kindness, long-suffering, and the willingness to bear all things. Take my old emotional habits, mindsets, automatic reactions, rude assumptions, and self-protectiveness, and make me patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. . . Only You can transform me."
The author has also written at least one other Prayer Card booklet, from her book "The Power of a Praying Parent", and I intend to buy it, too, so that I can keep my neices and nephews in daily prayer. I highly recommend these cards.

About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley is professor of history at the University of Hawai`i and editor of the Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research has concentrated on global history and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996) discusses the historiography of world history. His current interests include processes of cross-cultural interaction and cultural exchanges in modern times.

Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught courses on world history for the last 19 years and is currently the director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. For several years, he also served as the book review editor of the 'Journal of World History'. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of 'Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy (1990)'. He is at present working on a study that explores uncharted aspects of German society, especially the cultural manifestations of humor and satire in the Nazi era. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Heather Streets Salter is Associate Professor of History at Washington State University, where she teaches World History at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She received her Ph.D. in the History of the British Empire at Duke University in 1998. She is director of the WSU History department's World History Ph.D. program, and director of Washington State University's undergraduate World Civilizations program. She served as an area editor for the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern World, published in 2008 by Oxford University Press. Recent publications include Martial Races: The Military, Race, and Masculinity in British Imperial Culture, 1857-1914, published in 2004 by Manchester University Press. Her forthcoming book (co-authored with Trevor Getz), Imperialism in the Modern World, will be published by Pearson in 2010.

Very Basic Basics

I have to say that I have looked at (via library) other pattern making books but I still wanted one of my own that was for beginners. It was kind of a stretch for me to buy this book since it was so new and there were no reviews on it yet.

First off, this is a good book, but that's mostly what I'll say in its praise. This book really does explain why certain lines are drawn, why darts are placed in what position, and how to measure properly. It is helpful in making the basic top and skirt blocks. Besides those very basic things, it has a bunch of pattern-drafting help for shirts, skirts, sleeves, and collars. There are no pants (with the exception of a pair of culottes in the skirt section) and no dresses.

Maybe it is only because it is the Basics book, or maybe for reasons I'm unsure of, most of these patterns seem a little outdated to me. I know this book came out this year, but a lot of the patterns she helps you make seem more related to the 80's-ish era. There are a lot of leg-of-muttonesque sleeves with gathers on top or throughout, flounces around the wrists, and all of the tops in here are button up. I know enough, though, to not add the seam allowance if I wanted a top without a button closure, or to add the seam allowance in the back for a zipper, but this book still seems to be lacking certain points. Again, she might cover the more "modern" clothes in her Advanced book that is coming out but I don't know that for sure.

All in all this book really is a good one, but I don't know if it's recommendable. The book I borrowed from my library was Pattern Drafting for Dressmaking by Pamela C. Stringer. It's a very old book but I feel like the designs in it can be more modern and useful than this book. The pictures are very helpful, though, and I feel like I might get more out of it once I read it through a few more times. It's probably more helpful than I'm making it out to be, but it's still not quite what I was wanting.

Really basic, very plain...

I was hopeful that it would be more comprehensive, it is only so-so. There is a great deal about bodice structure but not nearly enough about pants or dresses in here. It does a good job of explaining the what and why of certain points but completely skips over others. If you want to give someone a book on making pants, find a pants patterning book though.

Great insight but leaving me wanting more

I received a copy of Wisdom Meets Passion by Dan Miller and Jared Angaza from Booksneeze for my honest review. So here is my honest review.

I was excited to read this book because it claims to show readers how to find work that "integrates your skills, personality traits, and passions; provides a sense of meaning, accomplishment, and fulfillment; be a person's greatest vehicle for living out God's purpose and calling; and ensure an unexpected flow of income and ultimate wealth." However, I feel that this book just didn't apply to me.

First of all, I have no idea what God's purpose and calling is for me, and this book doesn't offer insight as to how to figure it out. Perhaps I am supposed to visit the 48Days.com community online (based on Miller's other book 48 Days to the Work You Love) and pay for a coaching session.

Second, the personal stories told by Miller's son Jared Angaza (yes, son - Jared changed his last name because of his love of Africa) were kind of annoying. I get it. Jared lives "outside the box." He shunned the American way of life - big houses, fast cars, material yearnings - to live and work in Africa with his wife and adopted son. He's been incarcerated. He wrote and passed a law for women's rights. The only furniture his family has is a mattress with homemade mosquito net. They run a sustainable clothing line.

Well, good for them but I like furniture. I like living in my house. I don't think of myself as materialistic. I just want my home to look nice and have enough money to pay the bills and do things that we enjoy doing while also having the free time to do those things. I felt like Jared was saying that the only way to find a fulfilling job and enjoy your work was to give up everything, live in a third-world country, and run a non-profit.

Also, much of what Jared writes for his sections didn't seem to have anything to do with the book's main topic. I guess if you wanted to start an aid organization or non-profit for Africa, it's good insight. But if you're going to tell us the ways in which Africa needs to be helped, just write a separate book.

Wisdom Meets Passion is a good book if you are unemployed and trying to find a new job, perhaps a better job than what you had. It could also be good for a recent high school or college graduate. Some of the book is inspiring and raises good questions, such as "How would your life be different if you were using your strongest God-given talents?" (Well, I don't know what those are, so...)

This book tries to get you to look beyond safe and stable positions. It encourages job seekers to keep an open mind. (Kind of like in dating.) It also points out that a manager of a Taco Bell makes more money than I do, which just goes to show that you can make more than $40,000 a year without getting a college degree. (And think of the sweet discount you'd get on chalupas!)

I think the one thing I will take away from this book is that work isn't meant to be a punishment. Work is supposed to be enjoyable. We are supposed to like going to work and doing what we do, and I can definitely say that I wouldn't enjoy being a Taco Bell manager.

Wisdom Meets Passion: When Generations Collide and Collaborate by Dan Miller and Jared Angaza combines the wisdom of the Greatest Generation with the passion of today's 20-somethings in a book filled with advice for the person who is looking to live their life with more authenticity, courage and faith.

If you only follow your passion, you may end up taking too many risks in your life and career. But if you only follow the wisdom of the elders, you may not take enough risk and end up with a boring, mediocre life with a job that you dread.

In this book, you can learn how to use your unique traits and combine them with dedication and your dreams to live the best life possible. This book is both edgy and insightful and offers a unique perspective by this dad-son team. I also liked how their perspectives included work domestically and abroad. I also liked the solutions for today's reality of job losses, lay-offs and self employment.

Hilarious, weird, awesome stories.

Hilarious stories from a true comic genius. It's scary but I think my mind works in a similar way to Limmy's own twisted mind - he manages to write about those weird things that go on in your head but you dont really tell anyone about them because you can't put them into words, but somehow Limmy does it, and does it really well. If you like the TV show you will love this book. If you don't like the TV show because you can't understand the accents then you'll love this book! Please keep writing Limmy!! :)
