About the Author

JANE STRAUS (1954–2011) was an educator and best-selling author with extensive experience teaching English to adult learners. She created The Blue Book because she found no resources that explained English rules “in plain English.” Straus also created the popular website GrammarBook.com. LESTER KAUFMAN is publisher of GrammarBook.com. He married Jane Straus in 1987, eventually retiring from his career in government to help with her website. TOM STERN is a veteran reporter and columnist. In 2012, his bimonthly newspaper column on English grammar and usage won a first-place award in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest.

I'm a writer, editor, and writing teacher. I've never considered myself a grammarian, but I'm pretty good at recognizing what's correct and what's not. I currently teach a grammar course at a community college and have been looking for good grammar books. I bought this on Amazon for two reasons: low cost and high rating. I should have looked at the unusual number of single-star reviews. You get what you pay for. Even upon quick review, I found numerous errors and just plain bad advice. Here are a few examples:

COLONS
In her section on colons, the author implies that there are only two occasions to use the colon: when lists follow independent clauses and when sentences are joined without a coordinating conjunction, as long as the second sentence "explains or illustrates the first sentence." This is bad advice! First, what follows a colon most certainly does not have to be a complete sentence: a phrase or clause will do. Yet she doesn't have a so-called "rule" for this very common use of the colon! Here's one example of a colon construction that she completely ignores:

He was greeted by a horrible sight: a dead dog on his doorstep.

Furthermore, she instructs the reader to "use a colon instead of a semicolon" when the the second sentence "explains or clarifies" the first, yet in her examples,a semicolon would be entirely acceptable, or even preferable! This is totally misleading and just plain bad advice.

Her Examples:
I enjoy reading: novels by Kurt Vonnegut are among my favorites.
Garlic is used in Italian cooking: it greatly enhances the flavor of pasta dishes.

In each case, the semicolon would be a perfectly good punctuation choice, yet she has instructed the reader not to use it! Her examples are simply not exemplary; they are not illustrative of ideal use. Instead, try this:

Of all the authors I admire, one stands out as my favorite: Kurt Vonnegut.
The key to Italian cooking is garlic: it greatly enhances the flavor of pasta dishes.

The point is that colons, when used correctly, create suspense and excitement in writing. There is a kind of pregnant pause after the colon in which the reader, with bated breath, awaits the answer. The fact that the writer is not aware of this is a dead giveaway of her lack of expertise.

COMMAS AND SEMICOLONS
In Rule 21, she writes, "Use either a comma or a semicolon before introductory words such as namely, that is, i.e., for example .... when they are followed by a series of items." This is not correct! She just made this up! She cites the following examples as being correct:

You may be required to bring many items, e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.
You may be required to bring many items; e.g., sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.

I have never come across a single grammar or style book that allows a semicolon to be used to join an independent clause with a simple list. When it is used in conjunction with a list, its sole purpose is to separate items with internal punctuation. This is just bizarre.

Because it has been so difficult to find a good, inexpensive grammar textbook, I felt I had write this review for everyone else like me who's out there.

I hate teaching grammar...

Let’s be honest. No one is purchasing this book because it’s an exciting read and there are plans to release a movie version soon. You need a grammar book that will allow you to reference something quickly, such as using the correct form of ‘effective’ or how you should avoid using the word ‘literally’ when what you really mean is ‘virtually’. If that’s what you’re after, then this is the book for you. As an English teacher, I’m always on the lookout for an easy to use, teacher-friendly grammar book. What I liked most about this book was its organization and length. It cut right to the chase and focused on the most important parts of grammatically correct writing.
The organization of the workbook is its strong suit. It is easy to reference a particular rule or topic. Chapter Five is entitled; Confusing Words and Homonyms. It is a concise list of words that are often misused and confused. I use the list in my classroom every day! Literally, every day!

Excellent 2014 Update Makes A Worthy Addition To My Library

I regularly write letters to clients of our firm, and the Blue Book has been absolutely instrumental for proper grammar and punctuation. I was delighted to see this new edition — this update and revision does not disappoint! Being a weekly newsletter subscriber, I can appreciate the number of man-hours and meticulous research Mr. Kaufman and Mr. Stern devoted to this project. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it would be a shame if would-be purchasers paid attention to a critical review over the mistaken notion that one word was supposedly used improperly. After all, anybody can put anything up on the web, but this book had to be reviewed and edited multiple times before publication. The 2014 version of the Blue Book is a worthy addition to my library. I look forward to referring to it frequently and often!

I was really into these 2 books. However it ended terribly, and there was no indication, of more books coming to correct this horrible let down. I don't know how an Author can just leave readers hanging like this. If I have missed something I am sorry, however it doesn't seem like I have.

From the dedicated given to this book, it must have been hard to write it. I've been waiting for what seems like forever for part two to come out. Calla seems to become more involved with Keir and seems to be falling for him as he is for her, but he wants to keep that danger out of her life. He's looking for his brother so they come across two companies they leave a message at one.... later that evening he was captured along with the girls.

I hope you don't make us wait too much longer for part three... totally loved the series

FUZZIES!

Owning a ferret is a little like owning a child - they require your full attention and a great deal of time, especially when they're young. When we bought our first ferret, Tycho, my wife and I had already done a little research and so we had some idea of what to expect. We should have done more, however. They're a handful, but ultimately worth it, because most ferrets are not only cute and cuddly, but smarter than most dogs and like cats, genuinely curious in most things in their environment. Before bringing your little carpet shark home it is important to know what you're getting into. Prospective ferret owners should do plenty of research before taking the plunge and buying one or more of the little cuties.
E. Lynn Morton's book presents an easy to read yet detailed fact book about fuzzies, basics like nutrition- ferrets are carnivores and cannot handle a vegetarian diet, and even explains proteins and how they can differ depending on the source. Discipline and how it should be done- and I have found that most books recommend the same basic techniques, none of which require hitting your ferret or even flicking its nose. And it was thanks to this book it explained seasonal weight loss and gains, something that had us very worried when Tycho shed a half pound in just a short while. It also talks about diseases common to ferrets and detail about their biology.
It has plenty of pictures of fuzzies, cages, toys, bedding, and what is and is not acceptable for ferrets to live in, sleep in and play with. More importantly it asks the reader to think about the time they will have to spend after getting their carpet shark- they require more care than either kittens or puppies at first and when they're out of their cages, require constant supervision. Tycho is joy to own, but it hasn't been all roses. He bit a lot and got into things he shouldn't have, but at six months of age we own a very loving and happy ferret who plays with us and new kitten pal, Fenix. Thanks to books like this and the others my wife and I have read, we're a little smarter for the experience and have a great new pet.

A helpful back up for the new owner.

I recently became co-owner of a baby ferret, Tycho--after the astronomer. Just lately Tycho has exhibited a rather alarming weight drop. Morton's book suggested itself as a useful resource for the nervous ferret "parent," and indeed it has been. In reading the section on weight cycles, we learned that the ferret tends to gain and loose weight according to the seasons and light intensity. What a relief! The little guy has been a dear and amusing pet, full of bouncing, peppy mischief, and we'd hate to loose him. It's nice to know we'll be better able to care for the newest member of our household with this new book.

Great Ferret Read!

Great ferret book! I own three ferrets and purchased this on a whim from amazon.com. I like the amount of info; it is a great book for first time ferret owners and experienced ferret owners will enjoy it too! It is packed full of detailed husbandry material but is easily read. I learned a LOT and my mom enjoyed it too(she's not too crazy about my ferts). I love Baron's Pet Library books and own the ferret book and dwarf hamster book too!

Good, short bio of a fine man

Good bio by a really good guy. A pretty devout Catholic, Montalban laces his short trip to a retreat with the story of his life. The book is not long so it is short on detail on his individual films but leaves you with admiration for his dedication to family and his craft. For those who only know him from Fantasy Island, I hope many will look back at his early film career. I particularly recommend his musical outings in Esther Williams films and with Jane Powell in Two Weeks with Love. Though not a singer or dancer by trade he admits, he does have a number of great dances with the legendary Cyd Charisse to his credit. Hopefully they will release Mark of the Renegade on video some time soon, another of his forgotten older films with Charisse.

A really good book!

I very highly recommend this auto-biography written by actor Ricardo Montalban. It is a great book for any fan of his. It was so interesting I couldn't put it down. It deserves as many stars as it can get. Read it and you wont be disappointed. He is an actor that was true to his Catholic faith through it all, and is a great father and husband His life is really a wonderful example for anyone. I'd give it ten stars if I could.

I am so proud to be related to Ricardo. his teachings in this book are very touching and relatable. He is not only a great figure for Mexican people but for the entire world, he was considered "the epitome of continental elegance, charm and grace on film and television and in the late 1940s and early 1950s" he reinvigorated "Latin Lover" style in Hollywood without achieving top screen stardom. Moreover, unlike most minority actors of his time, he fought to upscale the Latin (particularly, Mexican) image in Hollywood. His kind and humane personality is contagious and his incredible values and story are something to really admire. I strongly recommend this book to everyone.

One of the physicians whom Tissot quotes claims, for example, that masturbation causes “young persons [to] assume the air and the diseases of the aged; they become pale, stupid, effeminate, idle, weak, and even void of understanding; their bodies bend forward, their legs are weak, they have a disgust for every thing, become fit for nothing, and many are affected with paralysis”; and another, that “the too great loss of semen produces weakness, debility, immobility, convulsions, emaciation, dryness, pains in the membranes of the brain, impairs the senses, particularly that of sight, gives rise to dorsal consumption, indolence, and to the several diseases connected with them.” And Tissot himself writes of one of his own patients, “A young man, not sixteen years old, became addicted to masturbation to so great a degree, that finally, instead of semen there was an emission of blood, which was followed by excessive pain and inflammation of all the genital organs.” However, the reader should not mistake this piece as an out-moded medicinal work; Tissot also summarizes the beliefs of some ancient philosophers on masturbation and its effects on the mind. “Epicurus,” he writes, “regarded the semen as a part of the soul and body and prescribed rules for carefully preserving it.”

Tissot himself was born in Grancy, Switzerland in 1728, but practiced for most of his life in the Swiss city of Lausanne. He was one of the most notable physicians of his day. He was appointed Vatican medical advisor and once even received a letter of praise from Napoleon Bonaparte, who commended him in a letter dated 1 April 1787, for his, “days in treating humanity,” and even conceded that Tissot’s fame and reputation “has reached even into the mountains of Corsica.” Bonaparte then concluded, that he has a great deal of “respect for [Tissot’s] works.” And Bonaparte was not mistaken in his admiration of Tissot; even modern doctors still regard him as a basis for “future generations of doctors.” (Journal of Neurology, Volume 233, Number 2.)

Tissot is most noted in the medical community for a chapter that he wrote on the migraine in his more comprehensive Traité des nerfs et de leurs maladies (Treatise on the Nerves and Nervous Disorders) and modern doctors now regard him as “the classical authority on the migraine.” But Tissot’s best-seller, and one of the best-selling medical books in the entire 18th century, was a small book that he published in 1761 entitled, Avis au peuple sur sa santé (Advice to People on their Health). As the title suggests, Tissot’s best-seller was a handbook for people who wanted to maintain good health and establish habits that were essential to living long and healthy lives.

One year before Tissot had published his famous Avis au peuple sa santé, he published the following work: L’Onanism: Dissertation sur les maladies produites par la masturbation (Onanism: A Dissertation on the Diseases Caused by Masturbation).

He continued to practice in Lausanne until his death in 1797 at the age of 69.

I do not recommend this book to anyone hoping to gain disability benefits

This book fails to deliver what it promises. I've masturbated religiously, sometimes up to 10 times a day, for the past month since my first read through and if anything, my eyesight has improved! There's an extra bounce in my step, a genuine smile on my face, and my handshake has more exuberance and firmness to it than ever before, not "effeminate, idle, and weak" as it should be.

I do not recommend this book to anyone hoping to gain disability benefits.

I was wondering why my crotch was red and had a rash. Then I read this book. Now it makes sense! The rash is caused by masturbating too much. Also, I'm glad amazon suggested that I buy lotion during checkout. Thanks amazon! No more rashes.

This makes Jesus sad, and that is why we suffer

Until reading this book, filled with all of the most modern medical findings, I didn't truly understand what I had been doing to my body, and not just my body, but my soul. My withered, decaying husk was in shambles. I would masturbate for up to six hours a day, rubbing everything I could find across my pulsating member, spewing my seed on every surface of the house. This makes Jesus sad, and that is why we suffer. I will spend the rest of my life resisting the urge to purge the splurge, and it's all because of this fantastic book. Thank you, Dr. Samuel. You are a god send. I was tempted to masturbate to your picture, but thankfully your teachings have given me the strength to resist.
