Ralph Fletcher has always been a special person for children's literature. He is the author of picture books, nonfiction, and novels for young readers. How to Write Your Life Story is the fifth book in Mr. Fletcher's series of instructional writing books, which includes A Writer's Notebook, Live Writing, How Writers Work, and Poetry Matters. Mr. Fletcher lives with his family in New Hampshire.

Invigorate Your Teaching of Nonfiction Writing in Your Classroom

Nobody handles hard topics with a soft touch better than Ralph Fletcher. This book is no exception. For a variety of reasons, it seems that ed reform has sucked the marrow out of the nonfiction writing kids once loved. if you've been struggling with nonfiction writing in your classroom, this book is the life saving transfusion you need.

As with each of Ralph's books that I have read, this one, too, features a satisfying blend of big ideas, focused practices, and wonderful stories as only Ralph can tell them.

We all read a lot of professional literature but, truth be told, many of us (myself included) hunger for the teachable tidbits, often leaping over the subtler insights that are a book's connective tissue. Here, however, I would encourage readers to lay back, relax, and let Ralph's unique voice and generosity of spirit flow over as you as you savor every word. In addition to being a great writing teacher, Ralph is a great writer, and as this is a nonfiction book, I found much to learn about the teaching of nonfiction from the entirety of the book itself.

As always, Ralph's books are thoughtful. You can feel him caring about every word the way the best writers do.

I've been reading Ralph's work for the entirety of my 20+ years in education. This is literally true as I won a copy of his "What a Writer Needs" in the first summer writing institute I ever attended.

Each of Ralph's books has somethng unique to offer, but two themes run through everything of his I've ever read: A respect for children and a respect for the craft of writing, two things that live deep within his heart.

As a final, more prosaic note, I can attest to the real-world validity of the nonfiction writing process he describes in this book. It is the same process my wife, a freelance writer as Ralph used to be, uses to do her work.

If you want to invigorate the nonfiction writing in your classroom, this is the book for you. If you want to understand what it is to be a nonfiction writer, so you can infuse your teaching with that kind of authenticity, this is an even better book for you.

AN AVERAGE VAR BOOK

This book well explains what is Value At Risk and the concept of risk management in banks. Business concepts are complete. The author gives a lot of weight in risk control.
However, he lacks to give detailed examples on how to calculate VAR, the mathematics/statistics behind. Spreadsheets are nice but not complete from the beginning to the end. Important statistical methods are described without enough detail leaving the concepts out the book's scope.

They will look like how old photographs look that have been colorized

This is a non-traditional coloring book in that the images are already shaded, however they are lightened sufficiently for coloring and your colorings will end up looking sort of antique. They will look like how old photographs look that have been colorized! Here are examples of the pictures...

The paper feels like cheap printer paper

Although the pictures are gorgeous they are not ideal for a coloring book. Everything should be just white with black outlines but instead there is a ton of gray throughout. I think they just took his images and made them grays calendar instead of actually taking out the colored sections. Also the paper is very thin. I was hoping to use my new brush pen markers (similar to watercolor) but they bleed through. The paper feels like cheap printer paper.

I thought the pictures looked sufficiently light based on the reviews of others and the available pictures, but they are simply way too dark.

Excessive one-time payoffs encourage CEOs to "swing-for-the-fences,” so that doing mega-deals where they can "take the money and run" trumps doing what's best for the company in the long run. We need to reject the idea that excessive pay for CEOs is just a “normal” part of capitalism in the same way we refuse to accept price fixing, embezzlement and other corrupt activity. Boards of directors should be put on notice that approving such deals is a breach of their fiduciary duty, and they should be held to account through shareholder suits, SEC actions and by the press. This issue concerns everyone – Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative – who values free enterprise and wants to see it maintained and strengthened.

About the Author
Steven Bavaria writes about finance, economics and politics, drawing on forty-five years experience in international banking, credit, investment, human resources and journalism. Bavaria began his career at the Bank of Boston, handling a variety of international credit workouts, including a corrupt Greek shipowner, a Vatican-owned bank and troubled branches in Australia and Panama. He later ran the bank's human resources department, his first exposure to the conflicted governance process that he writes about in "Too Greedy for Adam Smith." Later he worked at Standard & Poor's, where he introduced credit ratings to the syndicated loan market. In between he was a reporter for Investment Dealers Digest, Associate Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and worked briefly for Citibank. He ended his career with a stint at a smaller rating agency where his article "From Banker to Bookmaker" was deemed a bit too candid in describing the conflicted role of major investment banks. Bavaria graduated from Georgetown University and New England School of Law. He and his wife Betsy have four children and three grandchildren. They live in Chestnut Ridge, New York.

Steve quickly outlines the problem with current CEO compensation and makes a great case as to why this is working against modern capitalistic principles. The American worker is getting killed by the greed and self serving actions of corporate America.

I enjoyed Steve's book and recommend it to anyone wondering what is happening to the American middle class.

Having worked on Wall Street, and still having close ties to the capital markets, I am never surprised by how little the layman understands the dynamics of the Board Room of publicly traded companies.

How can a Board, with a straight face, fulfill its fiduciary duty by paying a CEO $20MM+ when the market rate is a small fraction of that? Simple - free market economics have no place in the socialist world of publicly traded corporation board rooms. The absence of fiduciary duty is propagated through insular group-think.

The author explains this breakdown of economics, and the consequences that extend far beyond a so-called wealth gap and the impact on the fleeced shareholders.

If you think that the Board represents the shareholders, and that the market sets the pay of executives, this book is for you. Because that is an idyllic, false understanding. If you are a free market proponent, like me, you need to know how and why this happening, before Congress replaces an absence of market economics (price fixing) with their own version of absence of market economics (a zebra with a different stripe, but still price fixing).

This book can be read well by people with only a basic understanding of economics. The author accurately explains the fundamentals you need to know. In particular, the "iron law of wages," which is laughed at on Wall Street.

Quick read, and a great summary. Designed for the person that knows something is wrong, but can't quite put their finger on it.

Clearly and persuasively written, Bavaria's book provides valuable insight into a critical problem with our economic system which if left uncorrected will endanger everyone's economic well being. Hopefully, this book will be widely read. Only by understanding the problem as Bavaria provides us the means to do, can the much needed corrective actions be taken.

Fantastic Read!

Martina Cole is one of the best authors out there today because she is writing what she knows! She uses her own experiences and writes over-the-top best sellers. The areas in the underworld of England is where she pens a lot of her books and they are just so interesting and full of surprises as to what people do when they are hungry, cold, poor and wanting a better life. In this book; a young girl basically sells herself to a pedophile for a chance to have a life of good food, clothing and all of the basic things people should have. She achieves all of this and succeeds in maintaining a higher standard of living once she is free of the pervert. Loved the book!

Exhilarating page turner

Goodnight Lady is my favorite Martina Cole novel. It starts out with a child named Briony Cavanagh and the horrible and disgusting things she had to do in order to survive and make it in her world. The novel spans decades and is an interesting and well written account of Briony's life right up til she is 90 years old. Loved it and can't wait to read the rest of Ms. Cole's novels. BRAVO!!

Love Martina Coles books- she has never failed in providing an interesting absorbing read and seems to just keep going - thank goodness I couldn't bear her to stop writing. her characters are larger than life and close to life. Martina cole
knows the criminal underworld she writes about, it feelsbas though she has lived and breathed it- she is able to enter the world of villains, skulduggery, abuse and violence and weave it into,compelling stories. I was a probation officer in my other life and Martina writes about the world I stood at the edge of and whose clourful people I loved and strove to understand even a little. Good one Martina we love u.
