Stiltonoot’s adventures are told in the tried-and-true format, i.e., ample colorful illustrations, diagrams, maps, words in the text frequently enlarged in a dizzying variety of fonts, and side blocks with bits of information and nonsense. Here Stiltonoot must overcome many perils to rescue the famous Stone of Fire stolen from the mouseum by the evil Tiger Khan. Literary references include Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes; however, the plot is more in the nature of Indiana Jones. A Nice Change of Scene

The Geronimo Stilton series is good fun, but after more than 50 volumes it seems to have run out of steam a bit. This book is the first in a spin-off series, and it breathes new life into the continuing adventures of Geronimo.

In this series we are in the Stone Age following Geronimo's ancient ancestors. The set up is the same. The hero/narrator is Geronimo Stiltonoot. Most of the old characters are back in slightly changed forms. Geronimo now publishes his newspaper one chiseled stone tablet at a time. Mouse Island is now Old Mouse City.

But, the humor and silliness is the same. For novelty, in this series there are Flintstone-like bits, (Geronimo drives an "autosaurus"; the enemies are sabre-tooth tigers, and so on.) We still have colorful and varied print fonts, antic illustrations, detailed maps of the action, and lots of puns and jokes. As usual, some of the jokes are likely to be over the heads of readers, but that's O.K. because that just means there are different jokes and different rewards for different levels of readers.

So, if you have drifted away from Stilton, this might be a draw to come back. If you're new to Stilton, this is a fine place to begin. Either way, the book is certainly worth your consideration.

My daughter loves it

I started getting Stilton books for my eight-year-old daughter and she loves all the books we have got so far. The stories are well written and the language used in this books is wonderful, nothing like other popular kids books out there that are not that appropriate for young students.

A D F# B Tuning not G C E A Tuning

The only reason I gave this book only 1 star is because it isn't the typical G C E A tuning, which is what I was expecting, and is for A D F# B tuning. I obviously didn't read the description.

Other than that it is a typical how to with old songs - the reality is that in this modern age one is better off just going on YouTube to learn.

Spartan material for adults

Spartan is the word for this book. More diagrams than words. Recommended for serious adults. Your kids may find this a bit difficult to follow.

The first part of this book is about basic techniques and 8 songs. The techniques are described in a simple, precise manner. Songs come with simple chord diagrams (e.g. for singing-along) above the score, while more sophisticated chordal solo diagrams are presented below the score. No words from the author on each of the songs, apart from this: "Practice these diagrams just as given and you will find that you shall indeed be playing the melody of the song in a chordal structure right on the uke."

The second part is about chord, chord, chord. First you practice popular chord changes in every key. Then there comes some interesting "opening and ending" patterns, which is quite useful. And finally the chord fingerings for standard chords in every imaginable inversion within an extent of uke fingerboard.

All of these in only 48 pages. I've never seen such a condensed material for uke.

But the Scales Fell From My Eyes

Other reviewers here are right about the first half of this book being so simplistic that it's nearly not worth reading. [Thanks, Mr. Smeck, for pointing out where my index finger is.] But what makes this book golden are parts two and three. The chord family arrangements are truly an education in themselves, not that the author gets into any detail at all about the nature of the relationships or even what you're looking at. In fact, it took me a while to realize that the major and minor chord families that appear on each page are, in reality, pretty much everything you need to compose a decent song in any key. Once that dawned on me, I was off and running. If you learn these, and learn them well, you've got a basic education in chord theory and progression without the verbiage. So forget the goofball instructions -- they're so bad, they're nearly insulting -- in the first half of the book (unless you really want to learn 'professional novelty strokes' such as the amazin' figure-eight and zig-zag stroking methods), and concentrate on the book's latter half.

Psychiatrist and Harvard professor Greene follows up The Explosive Child with an in-depth approach to aid parents and teachers to work together with behaviorally challenging students. Greene's philosophy is driven by the recognition that "kids who haven't responded to natural consequences don't need more consequences, they need adults who are knowledgeable about how challenging kids come to be challenging." Greene's "Plan B" system, which is fully and clearly explained in the course of the book, emphasizes identifying challenging behaviors-acting out, hitting, swearing, poor performance in class-and then working with students to find actual, practical ways to avoid them. Helpfully, Greene uses a fictional school for examples, devoting several pages to illustrative anecdotes in each chapter, greatly increasing the material's accessibility. Greene's technique is not fail-proof, principally because it requires the good will and hard work of all participants; a section on implementing Plan B in the face of real disagreement or apathy would have been helpful. However, Plan B has all the qualities of accessibility, logic and compassion to make it a solid strategy for parents and educators.

Zero-tolerance policies in school that take swift and harsh action against children for misbehavior are in danger of attaching labels and stigma to children with behavior problems, according to Greene, psychiatrist and author of The Explosive Child (1998). Greene explores the causes behind the behavior of children who are considered hard to control. He maintains that such children are not acting out of defiance but because they lack the skills to adapt their behavior to school norms. When adults take the time to teach children adaptive skills in increments, they see remarkable improvements in the behavior of these children. Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist, Greene recounts vignettes of challenging behavior—from crying and whining to avoid tasks to manipulation to disruptive shouting or truculence. These children often have difficulty changing routine during the school day, reflecting on many thoughts at the same time, or managing emotions. Green advises making a checklist of unsolved problems and lagging skills and devising specific plans for addressing them. Must-read for teachers and administrators

I want to buy a copy of this book for every teacher I know. I teach elementary school and am constantly frustrated at how all behavior management, from the classroom to the school and district levels, boils down to reward and punishment. Obviously, that system doesn't work, because it's the same kids receiving said rewards and punishments day after day--if it worked, wouldn't the punished kids eventually learn?

This book highlights exactly why they don't learn: because they need to be TAUGHT. I couldn't be rewarded or punished into becoming a good chess player, because no matter how many cookies or slaps on the wrist you gave me, I still don't know how to play chess! The same applies to kids who have emotional, behavior, or at-home issues that lie at the root of their frequent "misbehavior." Understanding that, and teaching problem-solving and special behaviors the same way we teach academic skills, is a much more worthwhile and effective way to address recurring behavior issues in students of all ages.

Long overdue -- powerful and effective

I am a clinical psychologist specializing in pediatric neuropsychology. I was introduced to Dr. Greene's Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) approach during my post-doctoral training at a multidisciplinary center for children/adolescents with dyslexia, AD/HD and other learning and behavior disorders. CPS is powerful and effective but takes lots of patience on the part of adults. It is a long-overdue as an approach that is needed in our schools.

I have worked with so many teachers who cite "motivation" as the reason for a child's behavior problems. I have seen functional behavior analysis forms with checkboxes for "low motivation." What, in fact, is "motivation"? It is one of the those temrs that SOUNDS like it explains something, but it doesn't really explain anything at all. No child WANTS to fail, WANTS to be embarrassed in front of his/her peers, WANTS to go to the principal's office, or WANTS to suspended. As Dr. Greene makes plain: "Children do well if they can." If they can't, it is up to the adults to figure out the skill deficit and teach them the skills they needed.

The education community now realizes that the "wait-to-fail" model does not serve children, but many are confused about how to implement "response to intervention" approaches, especially for behavior problems. The diagnosis doesn't matter; identifying the skill deficits that cause behavior problems does. The skill deficits are similar across diagnostic labels -- oppositional defiant disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or a learning disability.

This approach is not a cure-all. It is somewhat language-intensive and may or may not be as effectice for children with language deficits. I don't believe that children fail school; I believe our schools are failing our children. This approach can go a long way toward helping schools help the most vulnerable children in our communities.

Great Book for Teachers and All Other School Personnel

This book takes a completely different approach to classroom discipline. No more rewards and punishments, but actually talking to kids and finding out what concerns they have. Then, the adult and child reach a solution together which makes it more likely the solution will stick.

There's a running story throughout the book that really helps with understanding this approach along with Q & A sessions that also provide added understanding. It's outside-the-box thinking that seems like it would really work. There are ways to get parents involved too so it's not all on the teacher. Highly recommended!

About the Author

Sheldon S. Williamson received his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Electrical Engineering with high distinction from University of Mumbai, Mumbai, India, in 1999. He received the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in 2002, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree (with Honors) in 2006, both in Electrical Engineering, from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL, specializing in automotive power electronics and motor drives, at the Grainger Power Electronics and Motor Drives Laboratory. Dr. Williamson is an Associate Professor within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, where he has been working since June 2006. His main research interests include the study and analysis of electric drive trains for electric, hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and fuel cell vehicles. His research interests also include modeling, analysis, design, and control of power electronic converters and motor drives for land, sea, air, and space vehicles, as well as the power electronic interface and control of renewable energy systems.

Dr. Williamson has offered numerous conference tutorials, lectures, and short courses in the areas of Automotive Power Electronics and Motor Drives. He is the principal author/co-author of over 150 journal and conference papers. He is also the author of numerous book chapters related to transportation electrification, power electronics, motor drives, energy storage systems and renewable energy systems. Dr. Williamson has been selected as the General Chair for the IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference, to be held in Detroit, Michigan, in June 2014. He will also serve as the Student Activities Chair for the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, to be held in Montreal, Canada, in Sept. 2015. In the past, Dr. Williamson has served as the Technical Program Chair for various conferences, including the Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IEEE IECON 2012), the IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference (2011), and the IEEE Canada Electrical Power and Energy Conference (2009). Dr. Williamson also served as the Project Coordination and Awards Chair at the 2007 IEEE Canada Electrical Power Conference, Montreal, Canada. He was the Conference Secretary for the 2005 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, Chicago, Illinois.

 Dr. Williamson is also the beneficiary of numerous awards and recognitions. He was the recipient of the prestigious “Paper of the Year” award, for the year 2006, in the field of Automotive Power Electronics, from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (IEEE VTS). In addition, he also received the overall “Best Paper” award at the IEEE PELS and VTS Co-sponsored Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, in Sept. 2007. He was presented with the “Best Paper” award at the Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IEEE IECON 2012), held in Montreal, Canada, and at the IEEE Canada Electrical Power and Energy Conference, in Halifax, Canada, in Aug. 2010. He was awarded the prestigious Sigma Xi/IIT Award for Excellence in University Research, for the academic year 2005-2006. In 2006, he also received the “Best Research Student” award, Ph.D. category, within the ECE Department, at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.

Dr. Williamson is a member of the IEEE. He currently serves as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS). He also serves as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics. He also serves as the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Chapter Chair for the IEEE Montreal section. He is a member of the IEEE PELS, IES, and VTS.

fast paced adrenaline pumping action

Take a thrilling ride with FBI agent Kyle Roberts and (I never should have returned to Mistake Creek) Nina O’Brien as they fight to prevent a biological terrorist attack on the citizens of San Francisco all during the worst storm Mistake Creek, California has seen in years.

This is a fast paced read. It was easy to get swept up in the adrenaline pumping action. I read it in two days. The storyline is straightforward, although it does have its unexpected twists, and it’s not so far fetched that it becomes unbelievable.
Kyle is a likeable protagonist, tough but not too tough. Nina is strong and capable and proves she can hold her own when the going gets rough.

Mistake Creek will appeal to a wide range of readers, especially those that like a thrilling read filled with danger and action but will also appeal to those that like a little romance with their thrillers.

If you are already a fan of author Rachel Amphlett, Mistake Creek will not disappoint. If you haven’t discovered her amazing thrillers yet, I highly recommend them and now is the time to start.

As usual, Rachel Amphlett has done it again. Great storyline and characters add up to another good read. I found this book to be different from others she wrote; but, it holds your interest and you will find you don't want to put it down until you finish it. I look forward to more from this up and coming author.

Loved this gripping thriller!

As Nina O’Brien and Ross Flanagan worked side by side nailing boards over windows, tying down loose objects and racing against time, she wondered if she had done the right thing coming home to Mistake Creek and preparing her father’s truck stop for sale. With him no longer able to run the business, and Nina herself now living in the city after moving away ten years ago, she realized she had no other option; her heart wasn’t in it though as it had been her home for as long as she could remember. Still, with the storm bearing down on them, their choices were limited.

Finally inside and joined by long distance truck driver, Phil, they were shocked to hear the sound of a motorcycle roaring to a stop outside – when two soaked and dishevelled bikers banged on the door, Nina was more than happy to offer them shelter. But when another crash at the door revealed a bloodied and exhausted man, in a state of collapse, their shock was apparent. As Nina attempted to tend to the stranger’s wounds she knew something wasn’t right – her uneasiness was apparent – but then suddenly the dynamics changed, and she knew they were in trouble. She had no idea who she could trust…

Thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse, Nina knew she was in terrible danger – her life and the lives of others depended on her making the right choices. But the people involved had too much to lose; Nina was only collateral damage. Isolated as they were by the storm, with all communication lost, desperation and exhaustion was their constant companion. Would they be able to stop the threat of a dreadful terrorism attack from becoming a reality?

Mistake Creek by Aussie author Rachel Amphlett is an absolutely gripping thriller, fast paced from the very first page; it kept me enthralled until I reached the end a few hours later. With an excellent plot, the intrigue and mystery was tense and powerful. I have no hesitation in recommending Mistake Creek highly to all mystery/suspense/thriller lovers.

This Book was Made for the Actor or Director

I purchased this book because I am a theatre student and I had to perform a scene out of this play for my acting class.

This book is definitely the "actor's version" of the book, because it has chock-full of stage direction from playwright, which is great if you are interested in how to block your scenes should you be fortunate enough to perform it.

Other than that, the play itself is definitely of an adult nature, the language makes only vague references to sex and prostitution, but still a comedy nonetheless.
