Kate DiCamillo, author of the Newbery Honor book Because of Winn-Dixie, spins a tidy tale of mice and men where she explores the "powerful, wonderful, and ridiculous" nature of love, hope, and forgiveness. Her old-fashioned, somewhat dark story, narrated "Dear Reader"-style, begins "within the walls of a castle, with the birth of a mouse." Despereaux Tilling, the new baby mouse, is different from all other mice. Sadly, the romantic, unmouselike spirit that leads the unusually tiny, large-eared mouse to the foot of the human king and the beautiful Princess Pea ultimately causes him to be banished by his own father to the foul, rat-filled dungeon.

The first book of four tells Despereaux's sad story, where he falls deeply in love with Princess Pea and meets his cruel fate. The second book introduces another creature who differs from his peers--Chiaroscuro, a rat who instead of loving the darkness of his home in the dungeon, loves the light so much he ends up in the castle& in the queen's soup. The third book describes young Miggery Sow, a girl who has been "clouted" so many times that she has cauliflower ears. Still, all the slow-witted, hard-of-hearing Mig dreams of is wearing the crown of Princess Pea. The fourth book returns to the dungeon-bound Despereaux and connects the lives of mouse, rat, girl, and princess in a dramatic denouement.

Grade 3 Up-A charming story of unlikely heroes whose destinies entwine to bring about a joyful resolution. Foremost is Despereaux, a diminutive mouse who, as depicted in Ering's pencil drawings, is one of the most endearing of his ilk ever to appear in children's books. His mother, who is French, declares him to be "such the disappointment" at his birth and the rest of his family seems to agree that he is very odd: his ears are too big and his eyes open far too soon and they all expect him to die quickly. Of course, he doesn't. Then there is the human Princess Pea, with whom Despereaux falls deeply (one might say desperately) in love. She appreciates him despite her father's prejudice against rodents. Next is Roscuro, a rat with an uncharacteristic love of light and soup. Both these predilections get him into trouble. And finally, there is Miggery Sow, a peasant girl so dim that she believes she can become a princess. With a masterful hand, DiCamillo weaves four story lines together in a witty, suspenseful narrative that begs to be read aloud. In her authorial asides, she hearkens back to literary traditions as old as those used by Henry Fielding. In her observations of the political machinations and follies of rodent and human societies, she reminds adult readers of George Orwell. But the unpredictable twists of plot, the fanciful characterizations, and the sweetness of tone are DiCamillo's own. This expanded fairy tale is entertaining, heartening, and, above all, great fun.

*Starred Review* Gr. 3-6. Forgiveness, light, love, and soup. These essential ingredients combine into a tale that is as soul stirring as it is delicious. Despereaux, a tiny mouse with huge ears, is the bane of his family's existence. He has fallen in love with the young princess who lives in the castle where he resides and, having read of knights and their ladies, vows to "honor her." But his unmouselike behavior gets him banished to the dungeon, where a swarm of rats kill whoever falls into their clutches. Another story strand revolves around Miggery, traded into service by her father, who got a tablecloth in return. Mig's desire to be a princess, a rat's yen for soup (a food banished from the kingdom after a rat fell in a bowl and killed the queen), and Despereaux's quest to save his princess after she is kidnapped climax in a classic fairy tale, rich and satisfying. Part of the charm comes from DiCamillo's deceptively simple style and short chapters in which the author addresses the reader: "Do you think rats do not have hearts? Wrong. All living things have a heart." And as with the best stories, there are important messages tucked in here and there, so subtly that children who are carried away by the words won't realize they have been uplifted until much later. Ering's soft pencil illustrations reflect the story's charm. Ilene Cooper

Why must so many of our chidrens books and movies degrade the adults?

I did not care for how the book is written or for most of the characters. This is supposed to be a children's book (my 3rd grader read it with her class) but I felt like the themes of the book were not appropriate for a 3rd grader and the actions of the adults were almost without fail actions that would lead a child to believe that adults can not be honorable or dependable...the opposite of what I try to teach at home. This is again an example of the children (and the mouse) are more prepared and honorable than any of the adult characters

horrible story about a little mouse abandoned and betrayed by ...

A dark, horrible story about a little mouse abandoned and betrayed by his own family and sent to be eaten by rats, a little girl beaten in the ears repeatedly in the book until she can barely hear, and a couple of rats with a taste for blood and suffering. The book is filled with stories of abuse, neglect, slavery and references to torture. Two mothers die in the book. The mouse and the rat get their tails cut off with a butcher knife. The little girl is sold by her own father for a table cloth. The whole thing is a very ugly affair and not at all suitable for young children unless you want them to have nightmares. A very dark book throughout. In light of that, the ending felt fake and forced.

I can't believe this won a Newbery Medal!

Maybe it was simply the style of story telling that I didn't like. In most stories, the reader is an outside observer, but Kate DiCamillo wrote this so that there's some story teller inside the book talking to the reader...and she never lets you forget it! The only reason I gave it the other star is because she does use some advanced vocabulary which is wonderful. Fortunately, it took less than an hour to read. If it had taken more time, I probably wouldn't have finished it.

IF it had a different narration style, I would have loved to delve more into the story of the threadmaster, or maybe Ms DiCamillo will save that for another book. Some of her more intriguing characters were not well developed, and some of her less intriguing characters had too much page time. I didn't *want* to read an entire "book" about Miggery, but perhaps no one has ever cared what I want either.

A must have for people who do not want to spend $800 for the SHRM material

I didn't want to spend the $800 for the SHRM online material, so a friend recommended this book and I'm glad I took his advice. I used this book exclusively for studying for my SPHR exam and passed on the first try! Like some of the other reviewers said, it's a little wordy and can be confusing because information is repeated throughout the book, but if you're able to get past that and focus on the pertinent iformation, this is a great study guide because not only does it provide all the information that's in the SHRM material, but it goes further by providinig background information and "real life" stories and case studies to help with your comprehension of the material. The online tests and flash cards are also great tools.

The only negative that I have with the book is that it doesn't prepare you for the "type" of questions on the exam which are scenario based and highly subjective. To prepare for these typ of questions, I would recommend getting a study guide that has "test prep" questions with an explanation of the answers. I got one for $9.99 on Amazon, and it did an amazing job with preparing me with how to answer these type of questions.

Review of PHR/SPHR Study Guide

I come from a resourcing and recruitment background and decided to study for the PHR exam as a means to broaden my knowledge and add a qualification to my resume. I bought this book after great reviews by other users thinking that it could be used as the main basis upon which to study for the PHR exam. I read the book from cover to cover twice, condensed and summarized, took the chapter review tests and all the PHR online test practices that came with the accompanying DVD in which I was scoring full marks by the time it came for me to take the exam. I failed the exam yesterday and whilst I don't hold this book accountable for my performance, I would say to those who are using it without broad practical HR working experience and/or without the help of other study techniques, that you may find that it isn't enough. Most of the questions in my PHR exam were dissimilar to those in the book - sometimes using terminology I was unfamiliar with, and were often ambiguous where it was difficult to choose a 'best' answer because in the real world it would have depended so much on the situation. Some of the questions drilled down into detail that isn't covered in the book. I left the exam yesterday feeling disappointed and whilst as I say, I don't 'blame' the result on this book, I would like to warn students who do not have a breadth of personal HR experience not to pin all your studying on this one book.

Great Study Book - Only reason I passed

I bought this book because I didn't want to purchase the SHRM $800 plus study guide. I made notes from each chapter took all of the exams and read all of the answers in the appendix. The one thing I appreciate the most about this book was the answer keys. Each question not only gave you the answer but the reason why it was right and gave the definition or reason why the other answers were not correct. I really believed this helped me pass my exam because I was not only able to practice sample questions but also able to study the other terms in the same sitting.

The book is a bit wordy but I really liked the real life scenarios it had through out the chapters and if you are already working in HR (as you should) you can make your own real life connections to the text. What I did not like was the fact that the book repeated information through out the book. It would start talking about a topic and go more in depth in the following chapters.

My study method was to take notes from each chapter (read approx 10 pages a day M-F) then the last month prior to my exam I studied my notes chapter at a time M-W. Nine days before the exam I studied a chapter a day and ended each day with taking the chapter exam. I took the exam once checked my answers, then studied the answer key and retook the exam about 30-60 mins later. The next day I would take the exam again and study the next chapter, take that chapter's exam, study the answer key and retake the exam 30-60 mins later. The cycle repeated until I was done with chapters 2-8. On the day before the exam I retook every chapter exam; studied my notes from the first section of the book (essentially I had transcribed the answer key from the pre-test) and took the exam then I checked the answers and then retook the exam 30-60 mins later. I did not do too well on any of my first attempts and thought for sure I was going to fail my exam.

I am proud to say that I sat for my exam today and I passed. In order to pass you need an understanding of HR. Simply studying terms and court cases will not do it. This book will give you that and if you can embrace the knowledge and not simply learn for the sake of learning and passing the test this book should be all you need. I was unable to utilize any of the online tools this book offers because my computer is bobo and I was able to pass using only this book and the practice test it contains.

Great Guitar Book!

Since I teach classical guitar, I ought to know about the great players of the past and those of the present. This book is well written and gives very good information about the best classical guitarists. It does not have any color pictures - only black and white, but I'm o.k. with that. It does not contain any music, so don't expect any scores, but if you are music major in school studying classical guitar, then this book is extremely helpful in understanding the evolution of the classical guitar as it was played my many great guitarists over the years. A very good book. And it's BIG - you can't tuck it in your purse or shirt pocket.

A great reference book

This is a great book to have in your collection. All major players are covered (at least 3 or 4 paragraphs each), with the more significant players having 2 or 3 page biographies. The book provides a great historical perspective of the players, and even has a short section on luthiers.
