Yun Kouga began her career as a doujinshi author and debuted in 1986 with the original manga Metal Heart, serialized in >Comic VAL. She is the creator of the popular series Loveless and Earthian, along with many manga and anime projects, including character design for Gundam 00. Her works Crown of Love and Gestalt are also published by VIZ.

Still Unique and Original

Loveless 12 was a fascinating volume delving further into the backgrounds of several side characters (Nisei especially) but in the same process revealing quite a bit more about our main characters, Seimei especially. Yun Kouga doesn't introduce and then abandon characters - expect to see several from earlier volumes reappear in useful roles.

Story: Seimei has brought Soubi and Nisei to battle Moonless. No one is quite sure why Seimei brought two fighters, why he refuses to be a sacrifice in the battle, and why he only sends one fighter against Moonless (who shouldn't be able to beat them alone and without a sacrifice amplifying his powers). Faring poorly in the battle, Nisei recalls his history with Seimei and how masterfully he was manipulated: changed from a bully loner into enslaved fighter, emotionally bound but subservient to Seimei. Meanwhile, the Zero twins go to Ritsuka's house to try to find out more about Seimei. And finally, in a side story, Ritsuka is given 3 wishes by fairyYuiko. What will he wish?

Loveless continues to be one of the most layered, nuanced, and intriguing stories I have ever read. Panels seem to be innocent but have so many interpretations and levels of meaning, especially in the psychological sense. Volume 12 especially highlights so much that's deep about the story: the Zeros' inability to hate Ritsuka's abusive mother, Nisei's acceptance of his emotional enslavement, Mimuro's resigned acceptance of Nisei's defection, Ritsuka's conflict about his brother...

As with previous volumes, Yun Kouga sets a languid pace and bounces everywhere in the story. While Seimei is setting up a masterful battle, we're suddenly reading about a normal day at Ritsuka's school. Asynchronous and confounding, the story continues to be one that needs to be absorbed over several readings to really get all the meanings and interrelations. And it continues to be one of my favorite manga ever.

This is a great volume and had me enthralled since the first page.

Great art with a confusing storyline

Great art with a confusing storyline. I love this series despite the confusion the author makes (I find myself saying wtf is actually going on!). I love most of the characters and I'm just waiting to see it end. I don't know where else they can go with it or what other random stuff they can throw in. Not trying to be mean when I say this, but I don't think there's anything else but a conclusion and end to be made at this point.

Keeping it fresh in the classroom.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who is using the google classroom program. Technology has come along way in my lifetime. I wish that this had been created when I was in school. (Computers were not even around when I was in grade school). This is an easy step by step guide. To use this google classroom, your school must be enrolled in the Google Apps for Education (GAFE) program. I think every school should have some kind of program like this. It is great for teachers, students and parents. All assignments and class information can be looked at 24/7. Say your child is in grade school and has been out ill. A parent can log in and get classroom assignments and communicate with the teacher. Each teacher can customize the site to what is pertinent to their classroom. This program can also allow students to communicate and post information. Everyone learns in different ways. This is a great resource for our future techinical generation. We, as parents, grandparents and educators must keep up with new technology or we will be left behind!

Less Paperwork More Teaching

There has truly never been a more difficult time to be a teacher. Teachers need to be able to focus on teaching, rather than spending the majority of their time filling up paperwork and sending out various reports. Even with all this technology we now have right at their fingertips, many schools still fail to efficiently and appropriately incorporate this into their classrooms. Google classrooms is a great way to interact with and manage your class, it keeps the lines of communication open between students, teachers and parents, basically this book is an excellent guide for learning how to best use this great tool so that you can get great results. It covers literally everything you would need to know, from posting class assignments to managing your students and their grades. Hopefully this guide will make a difficult job a little easier.

Outstanding DVD included - but book itself is average

The included DVD is outstanding with interviews of japanese designers, and funny commercials. The design examples in the book are average. You can go to EPCOT in FL and see similar designs in the Japanese store.

Another source of inspiration

I picked this up, being a huge fan of Japanese design.

As a source of inspiration for graphic designers, this book does a terrific job. I currently have at least 10 pages flagged for follow-up, to use as a launching pad for my next concepts.

The book covers packaging, posters & ads, print, and web design, with each section offering up a visual smorgasboard (or revolving sushi-plate, if you will) of designs, including CDs, logos, ad campaigns, billboards, etc. As an added bonus, the CD offers a visual tour of Tokyo, interviews with prominent people in the Japanese advertising and design world, and samples of ads that have run on television.

All in all, this, as most Taschen books, is a brief, very general survey, with little if no copy, serving to inspire visually rather than educate intellectually. But the price is right, and the book is a great resource for visual designers everywhere.

Design at his best...

I have to disagree with the previous comment, the one referring to "Japanese Art". Sure, it would attract artists, architects and industrial designers as well, because it's such a beautiful book...
However, this book is targeted to Graphic Designers since it's called Japanese Graphics Now. I've seen it in detail... it contains a lot of stuff, from letterhead logos, web design, product and packaging design, poster and advertising examples... everything a graphic (or even an industrial) designer wants in a HUGE ammount (this book is really big... hundreds of pages).
The most interesting feature about this book is that the Oriental people, specially the Japanese have such a different notions of visualization and space treatment, that the way they develop graphic projects usually offer very different results to the ones we expect... (A signage project for a hospital IN THE FLOOR ??????????? Come on guys !!...)
Of course everything is very aesthetic and artistic, but all I have to say is that this book is REALLY a mind opener for graphic designers everywhere in the world...

I just LOVE this book. It is absolutely beautiful. The illustrations are gorgeous. Each story is different, yet has such a warm, magical, Christmas feel to them. This book is a treasure! I have bought three this year to give as gifts!

A Joyful Christmas

I bought this book and several others by James Ransome and have never been disappointed. The money was very well spent. I'm a teacher and have read James' books to my students and they love them just as much as I do. Once you've read his books I'm pretty sure there will be a special place in your heart for each story. Not only are the stories fabulous but the illustrations are so beautiful that there aren't enough words to describe them. Mr. Ransome is truly a gifted and talented man. CANNOT BE USED WITHOUT A CLASS, TEACHER, OR TUTOR

Do not purchase this expensive tome if you are trying to study Hebrew on your own. While it is modern Hebrew, you MUST have a class, a teacher, and/or a tutor to work your way through this massive edition. It is what they use for those making aliyah or studying in an ulpan in Israel, it doesn't mean it's the BEST way to teach or learn Hebrew for those of us wanting to study it outside of Israel. There are no vowel marks throughout the book. Even for me, someone who has studied Ivrit for several years, and can read Torah which has no vowel marks, this book is a struggle on my own. While it is true to how modern Hebrew is written and spoken and used today, it doesn't make it the best or easiest way to learn.

One of the best introductions to modern Hebrew can be found online for FREE at [...] Many people have also found Rosetta Stone very good.

I would recommend this book only if it is required for your class led by a teacher. Otherwise, move on to other texts that are far more user-friendly. Only after getting some competence could you begin to work your way through this unwieldy, unfriendly book.

Great book used in an ulpan in Jerusalem!

While my family was in Jerusalem, some of our friends there were in an ulpan (Hebrew language school for new immigrants). They were using this book! So I was very excited to see it here! I have been using this book on my own and like it very much. I was glad to see that you can get CDs to go with it and will probably get those next!

I like the pictures which helped me to get the "word stands for this thing" into my head. When you see a computer and say "machshev" it's like you are naming the thing you are seeing, and it seems to stick better. The stories and conversations are humorous, so their simplicity at first doesn't seem dumb. A very engaging book and fun to use. The only lessons that would be better are the totally interactive programs, but if you're like me and can't afford those. This book and the CDs are a good and affordable way to go!

thorough but not perfect

I am halfway through this text, working on my own. I've studied several languages before, so I'll admit I am familiar with the general experience of learning a language. I knew the Hebrew letters before I began this, but only about a dozen miscellaneous words, and no spoken grammar or sounds.

I agree with other reviewers that the lack of grammar explanation makes it harder to use. Because I have other language experience, I am able to make up for the lack of teacher, most of the time. I really like the audio CD and would not recommend studying without it.

The book is very thorough and overall it is well-planned. The handful of nouns and verbs in the opening chapters become the core of many layers of new words, and all cycle back and get repeated. The introduction of lots of borrowed English words, and many geographical place names, adds some instant vocabulary. If you are going to be in Israel, the early chapters will give survival words, like "I am from America" and "I live in Haifa."

The writers were not careful to vet every single lesson for its vocabulary, and in nearly every lesson, a word creeps in that isn't introduced until the next chapter or two. The CD occasionally has a different text, especially when it accompanies handwritten text. These are careless imperfections in a textbook that was clearly planned well otherwise. (A friend told me that it's typical of the military ulpan experience, so it may just go with learning spoken Hebrew.)

My chief criticism of the CD and text is that they didn't carry out the drudgery of reading through the vocabulary list for each lesson. Yes, friends, it's necessary! Nearly every word in the vocabulary list shows up somewhere in a dialogue, but you have to really watch and listen.

I found the opening chapters very overwhelming, because they introduced cursive letters right away, and not even always in the same hand or style, and right away, the words appeared without vowel pointings. Typically, you get the vowels once, and never again. So the first chapters are very, very scary. Reading remains slow and tricky compared to reading a full-alphabet language such as Russian or French.

My attitude in taking this on is what I'd recommend for anyone: take each lesson as it comes. Don't panic, just learn what's in the lesson. Go back and repeat, retrace, and copy out in a notebook for yourself, until you know every word and can read every phrase. Don't worry that you can't read anything else. Just learn the exact confines of that lesson, and then turn the page and learn the exact material of the next. Take your time, and review. Say them out loud, repeat them over in your spare time, and write our lists of words: singular, plural. He does, she does, they do. Gradually you will remember these things, and you will recognize words, and slowly you will learn Hebrew.

Overall, I do recommend this textbook. You learn lots about Israel, too.
