A Story to Remember

Even the start of the novel is gripping, and it is fraught with coincidences. If John F. Kennedy hadn't been shot, Peter Miller would not have pulled over to listen to the radio announcement. He would have missed the ambulance that he eventually followed. As an investigative journalist he thought he might be following a story. The ambulance's destination was the suicide of an old Holocaust survivor. "No story here," the detective advises him. Shortly thereafter the detective calls to tell him that the old man left behind a diary that describes the unspeakable cruelty he experienced in a concentration camp. Miller reads the story into the night. His attention is turned to one incident he reads over and over again. The diary ends with the old man's plea that someone please say Kaddish, the Jewish Prayer for the dead, for the sake of his soul. The coincidences build from here. The next day Miller decides to hunt a Nazi camp commandant, but not for the reasons we suspect. The story takes Peter Miller through other parts of Germany and Austria where he is being chased by the people he is pursuing. The journalist eventually finds and confronts the Nazi. The ultimate coincidence is revealed. His personal mission has far-reaching consequences.

In the end we learn about the fate of the characters, some fateful and some ordinary. This was the most stirring part for me. A young Israeli paratrooper enters the Hall of Remembrance in Jerusalem. His red beret satisfies the requirement of a yarmulka, and he fulfills the request of the old man whose soul died years earlier in a concentration camp near Riga.

With Forsythe's ability to mix fact with fiction, 1964 was a year in which a number of Nazis were found and brought to justice. Stirring.

riveting stuff

I won't review the storyline as it's been done already, and all I want to add is that this is a fantastic book. It's incredibly well researched, the author clearly knows his war history, and because several of the characters are actual wartime figures, the whole thing is a mix of fiction and non-fiction. The central characters are all really believable, and the writer is very good at describing a place so well you feel like you're there. I read this book in about two days because I became so engrossed in it. For a couple of dollars you can't go wrong with this one. An interesting climax too, not how I thought it would end. A great read, especially if you are interested in WW2 and what happened to the Nazis afterwards.

THE ODESSA FILE is one of Frederick Forsyth's classics. Cleverly written, meticulously researched, and absolutely readable, THE ODESSA FILE recounts the story of Peter Miller, a young German crime reporter who decides to infiltrate the secret Nazi support network in the early 1960s in order to discover the whereabouts of Captain Eduard Roschmann, "The Butcher of Riga," who sent some 80,000 people to their deaths in the Riga Ghetto.While Miller's outrage at the twisting of Germany by the Nazis is real and intense, his motivations are unclear...until the O. Henry ending.
This is fine historical fiction, melding historical figures (like Roschmann)and fictional characters (like Miller) together seamlessly.THE ODESSA FILE is an intense thriller, and rates as one of the finest and most memorable works of its genre anytime and anywhere.

Excellent!

I love this book quite a lot. I was so happy to find a romance novel with A. actual content, character development, and intellect B. a butch character! and C. a happy ending! There are so many lesbian romances, generally featuring two certifiable femmes, that end in a suicide or heartbreak of some kind. Learning Curve provides none of that, just honest romance with actual meaning and real characters. All things considered, this is an excellent first novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

Not perfect, but contained enough goodness to provide entertainment; worth a read

There was a lot to like about this book. Overall, it probably belongs in the same category as Fully Involved, or perhaps Heart 2 Heart, a couple of the most recent books I've read and reviewed. The writing isn't inspired, but it's solid. The characterizations are pretty strong, and the characters themselves are interesting and sympathetic, even with the inclusion of the bratty teenager. I wasn't bored with the book, and the tension created between the main characters sparked satisfyingly.

It was the transition between scenes where the book was at its roughest. Often it seemed like a string of solid scenes and experiences strung together by the flimsiest of phrasing or excuse for transition. This sometimes gave the emotional proceeding a herky-jerky feel, like a roller coaster, but not created intentionally through character drama, but rather the author jumping between scene transitions and character changes. And for all the drama of why Carrie was resisting her impulses, it all seemed to get cleared up in the end with neither a whimper nor a bang, but rather it just mysteriously disappeared, which was kind of annoying since it had been such a big deal all book long. This was cause for some reader mental whip-lash.

As a whole, I enjoyed reading this book, though. It was a very typical example of the average to above-average offering in this genre. There were scenes that evoked and captured true emotion. I enjoyed the fairly skillful weaving of support characters in with the drama and motivations of the main characters. I like it when they have good friends to confide in. I like the angst a character goes through as they try to change the perceptions everyone has had of them. I could have used a bit more consistency with motivations, and inspiration in the prose. But I will definitely check out further offerings from this author.

Brilliant New Author

I thoroughly loved reading Learning Curve. Although
this is the Author's first book, I can imagine that
it wont be the last one that graces my bookshelves. The Author displays an honest and true talent.
Her (Spangler's) description of the camping weekend took me back to my days in the Girl Scouts and I could almost imagine myself putting the tents up and singing around the campfire. Very engaging and accurate.
I particularly liked the fact that Spangler used the elderly lesbian as
the protector of the younger, misunderstood Tess.
The fact that this 'matriach' of the lesbian community was living a
perceived, well respected life amoung a community where religious
prejudice and misunderstanding is prevelant, was a simple, yet
empowering twist. I jumped with glee as I imagined the realisation in
Tess' mother's eyes.
The character and relationship development were realistic, intricate
and kept me on the edge of my seat.
My warm, happy and cosy endorphines flowed freely while I read along.

About the Author
Anura Gurugé was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1953. He, however, came of age in Britain, after year long stays in Buffalo (U.S) and Paris. Though he has lived in the U.S., the second time around since 1985, mainly in New Hampshire, he is very much a ‘Brit’ at heart, cricket an abiding passion. He started computer programming in 1969, and went to work for IBM when he was 20. Over the years he also worked for the likes of ITT, Wang and BBN, and was, for two decades, a leading authority on IBM networking. Superb outreach booklet and quick reference fo comet observers

Author Anura Gurugé did an outstanding job in collecting all available information on the discovery, confirmation and observation of the comet of 2013: C/2012 S1
The book was meant as a quick & handy reference guide for people interested in observing comet ISON C/2012 S1 but nonetheless provides the reader with thorough information on comets, these dirty snowballs of the solar system. It's a superb booklet for (amateur-) astronomers and a great read for the general public, who are asking themselves, as all astronomers do, if comet ISON C/2012 S1 will become the exceptionally spectacular comet as announced in early 2013... making it the great comet of the century?
The book has an interesting section on comet trivia and the 5 brighest comets since 1935.
The year 2013, with comet C/2011 L4 PanSTARRS and comet C/2012 F6 Lemmon, has already been a great year for comet observers and observers worldwide are looking forward to November 2013 when comet C/2012 S1 ISON will become a naked eye celestial object. Of course comets are very unpredictable...
I'm looking forward to an updated (color photos?) version of this book and congratulate the author with this great initiative!

Good Mountain Love

Sue Lyndon's portrayal of Ella, a young woman desperately fleeing an unwanted wedding drew me in immediately. Ella's plight is realistically portrayed, as is her reluctant attraction to the domineering bounty hunter Ed. Ella isn't sure she likes the way Ed dominates, and gently punishes her for rudeness, foul language and transgressions of his strict rules. But then, she isn't sure she doesn't like it either. As for Ed, Ella is a thorn in his side, and a burr on his heart.
Sue gives a believable glimpse into the loving world of a gently dominant man and his willing sub. You'll find yourself being pulled in and thinking that perhaps a loving spanking might not be bad at all.

I really enjoyed this story. It was the perfect steamy read to heat up a cool spring day.

Good story

Overall, I thought Mountain Devil was a good story. It's about a young woman who runs away the night before her wedding and literally runs into a bounty hunter. She begs him not to return her to her family yet in hopes that her wedding will be called off. His incentive is that her family will increase the reward for her safe return. They agree for her to stay with him for 7 days and that's the beginning of their relationship and it continues with lots of spanking. I had no problems with the spanking scenes, but I just didn't connect to the main characters of Ed and Ella. Ed seemed a bit cold at times and Ella came off as weak and always crying. Maybe I just needed more character development to feel more of an emotional connection throughout the story.

Ella Emerson is about to marry a man she despises and just can't bring herself to go through with it. Hours before her arranged nuptials she prepares a small pack to go hiking in the woods for a few days assuming that once the out of town guests have left, the wedding will be called off for good. She does not expect to be mugged in the woods by an escaped convict and she definitely doesn't expect the bounty hunter in pursuit of the convict to capture her for the reward money her parents have offered.

Ed, the dutiful bounty hunter, agrees to bring Ella to his cabin and hold her there for 7 days in hopes that the wedding will be called off instead of postponed and that the reward offered by her worried parents will increase. But, a lot can happen in seven days.....

Ella isn't in the cabin for 24 hours before Ed finds a reason to turn her over his knee for a sound spanking. Their relationship soon escalates into a romance and later into a marriage, but one thing that remains true from the get go: Ed wears the pants and calls the shots.

"Mountain Devil" is a fantastic spanking novel. Ed is a clear dominant whose tone is consistent throughout the book. While Jerry Maguire had his gal at "Hello," Sue Lyndon had me at this exchange:

"Buckle up, Ms. Emerson."

"You can call me Ella," she said.

"Fine. Buckle up, Ella." His voice was sarcastic. But then with more seriousness, he added, "And you can call me sir."

My only criticism of the novel is that I was initially somewhat confused as to when the story took place. Ella's wedding to Mr. Wrong is described as an arranged marriage of sorts, which led me to believe that the book took place many, many years ago. This assumption proves false with the mention of Ella's cell phone and had me adjusting my perspective. While this certainly is not a big deal, I think a small dateline at the start of the first chapter stating the time and place would go a long way.

This was a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to escape into a tale that takes place in the woods and, at times, over the knee.

About the Author

NANCY ROGERS is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at Florida State University. With research interests including music cognition and its pedagogical implications, Dr. Rogers has presented papers at national and international conferences, including meetings of the Society for Music Theory, the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, and the Conference on Interdisciplinary Musicology. She was a keynote speaker at the 2009 Musical Ear conference held at Indiana University. Several recent publications may be found in Music Theory Online, the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, and Em Pauta.

Professor Rogers received her Ph.D. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music; she is a Mellon Fellow in the Humanities. She has served as President of Music Theory Southeast, Secretary of the Society for Music Theory, and Treasurer of Music Theory Midwest. Before coming to Florida State University, she served on the faculties of Northwestern University, the University of Iowa, and Lawrence University.

Money Maker

While this is an excellent book for sight singing examples. It is probably the worst example I know where the publisher and author are really just interested in maximizing their profits. This book is on its 8th edition. It seems to get revised about every three years. They add a few number examples, switch the text around a little and call it a new edition. This edition is 99% the same as the 7th edition. But know, all the students have to go out and pay for a new book because because there is a "new" edition. I wish some professor would just say - hey we are going to use the 7th or 6th edition. There are plenty of used copies floating around out there. Most the the "song" numbers are identical. unless you have to have this edition, save yourself some money and buy an older edition.

An excellent resource for developing an essential musical skill

Typically, music students resist their music theory courses and enjoy the sight singing exercises associated with them even less. My experience as a student and as a teacher leads me to believe that this is usually because by the time the students first get around to learning this skill, they are already confident musicians on their instruments or have learned to sing some other way. To have to learn a new skill from scratch is disturbing and seems unnecessary to them. However, learning to sight sing brings many benefits.

Singing music helps one internalize the music more fully. One also develops a greater confidence with pitch than having it done in an instrument. It also helps one learn to sing through one's instrument - that is, to play even more musically. And by developing strategies to sing chromatic music, one has to think through the relationships within the piece. Once the skills are more fully developed, one can learn to come to terms with a new piece of music quite quickly. Therefore, one becomes not only more professional, the whole of one's musical experience deepens.

We used the second edition of Ottman's book when I was an undergrad in music in the late seventies and early eighties. This seventh edition is a much richer and more useable book. There are more than a thousand melodies, all nicely arranged to teach something specific. They are actual melodies from the literature rather than some abstract theoretical nothing. And there are lots of rhythmic exercises, so the student can gain skills in becoming more precise in rhythm and especially in rests (you know, letting the silence be silent). A new chapter with melodies from the 20th century is also a nice addition. The new edition also adds some exercises with structured improvisation for the student to experiment with his or her own melodies.

The spiral binding actually makes the book more durable and useable. It lays flat on your piano or music stand and the spine won't break and the pages won't be falling out. The print is crisp and clear which makes reading easy. This is important for a book you will be using in your theory courses for several terms.

Not only is this great for college students, I think high school and private music teachers would do well by their students to use this as part of their regular music lessons. Their students might fight it a bit (they always seem to), but they will become better musicians and more musical students if they develop the skill to sight sing.

criminally astronomical price

I had to buy this book for a music skills class. It serves its purpose quite well. However, the extremely high price is, in my view, completely unjust. This is a prime example of theft by the college textbook industry, and is indicative of a larger problem: the intrusion of market values into higher education. Instead of ensuring that students receive a worthwhile and useful education in their chosen fields, the priority appears to be the extraction of as much money as possible from a segment of the population that is already at an economic disadvantage. It's a tragedy that our society has failed to provide its young people with an opportunity to enter into professional life free of debt.

Should Have Been Better

I really, really wanted this to be a great read. The storyline seemed to be a good one, the idea seemed like it would make a great story. But somewhere along the way, it just never lived up to that potential. Honestly, I thought this was going to be a good, entertaining story, but it just plodded along - never quite making it out of the "okay" rating pile.

But just so you know, the novel and the writing was good enough to keep me reading all the way to the end. I'm not sorry that I read it, but when I finally ended the story, I couldn't help but think back on all of the ways the story could have been good, perhaps great. Just didn't make it.

A Celebration of the Spirit

I bought this book because I wanted to see how an author could realistically tell the story of a pregnant woman who is abandoned in a WalMart store and what happens to her after such a scary, disheartening event. I didn't think it could be done. I was wrong. Novalee Nation has absolutely nothing going for her when she is abandoned by the father of her baby while she's inside WalMart buying shoes to replace the ones that fell through the floor boards of the car she and her boyfriend were travelling in while she was napping. With a little luck and plenty of determination, Novalee not only gets through this experience, but she finds out just what she's made of in the process. She has no reason to expect anything but hard knocks considering how lightly those who should be closest to her play with and abuse her affection. But she has a way of reducing the most complicated circumstances to their simplest elements and works out a way not only to survive but find new people who are worthy of her love and respect. In depending on the kindess of strangers, she makes friends with a varied assortment of quirky characters who add to the charm of this book. The thing about this book is not only its heartwarming message about love, friendship, loyalty, and truth. It's that Billie Letts has made it all realistic and honest so that the message stays with you after the story is finished. Novalee Nation is a tribute to those who believe that God helps those who help themselves.

Billie Letts is an American treasure. She writes about people of the Midwest and what she writes is true to life. Where the Heart is is my favorite of her books. It was a fantastic first book from a woman who only wrote 4 before she passed away. Read Where the Heart is!

Unruly and Unruled

In this intriguing study of women who deliberately inspire laughter by making spectacles of themselves, Kathleen Rowe shows us how rebellious women--loud, domineering, voluptuous, slyly self-deprecating--employ their performance personas to satirize, parody, and call attention to the cultural norms that shape women's behavior. Using two "unruly" women, the television star Roseanne Arnold and Miss Piggy, the Muppet, Rowe illustrates how comedic women create disorder by refusing to occupy their proper places, engaging in excessive behaviors (body size, language, exaggerated sexuality), and crossing the threshold of acceptable moralities in their relationships with others. In Arnold's case, Rowe says, she has the power to "name her own experience, to create herself":

"Perhaps her greatest unruliness lies in the presentation of herself as author rather than actor or comedian, and indeed as author of a self over which she claims control. 'Roseanne' is a persona she has created for and by herself."

Rowe also looks at unruly women in Hollywood film: the comic performances of Mae West, Katherine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, Marilyn Monroe, and Cher, each of whom presents a different kind of unruliness--in the most interesting instances, parodies of the motifs that have been conventionalized in romantic comedy. Rowe also examines examples of men as unruly women, for example, in Some Like It Hot. "These comedic forms," she says, "hold out the promise of dissolving the barriers between the public and private, work and play, the social and the sexual." They also dissolve the barriers between the conventional and the marginal, and teach us how to laugh at what we often fear the most: the unruliness in ourselves.

For me, Rowe's analysis of Miss Piggy ("Pig Ladies, Big Ladies, and Ladies with Big Mouths") was the most interesting and illuminating, and I learned from her discussion of the carnivalesque. But for Rowe herself, Roseanne remains the most important figure, a "compelling example of the disruptive potential of the unruly woman" whose career and persona illustrate the "political power of women's laughter to 'bring down the house.'" In an afterword that explores the comedian's shifting presentations of body, style, language, and substance, she argues that it is these "metamorphoses" that reinforce Roseanne's "transgressive power." It is Roseanne and women like her who, by making unruly spectacles of themselves, allow us to see ourselves and the conventions that too often rule us. (Recommended for women's studies and culture/gender collections.)

A Feminist Examination Of Mae West

Kathleen Rowe's "The Unruly Woman: Gender and the Genres or Laughter," published in 1995 is a university press publication that examines Mae West's contributions to the Feminist Movement and evaluates her role as a female icon of the twentieth century. This treatment of West is a typical academic text with good research of textual sources, but with little or no interviews and featuring theory that is hit or miss.

When Mae West was asked why she never wrote an article supporting the Feminist Movement she reportably drawled, "I was nevah asked....."

Very interesting challenge to the status wuo of women and humor

Very much a work for a masters thesis. I was very much impressed with the research. It is an academic look at women and our still restricted acceptable behavior. Over the centuries it changed little and I am grateful for the women who try to break down the stereotype behavior society imposes on us.
