Thorough

This was the one book assigned for a class where I did NOT have to go out and buy a few other books in order to round out the assigned text. Chartrand has written books on graph theory directed at students of many different levels, and this one is advanced -- but the keynote attribute of this book its thoroughness and accuracy. The proofs depend upon appropriate use of accurate definitions, and here the definitions are VERY clear and specific -- therefore in constructing the proofs in the exercises the student really comes to understand the meaning of the definitions and the concepts they describe. At first I thought this book was going to be unapproachable because it does not kill you with friendly banter, but I have come to appreciate its solid approach and trustworthiness not to lead anyone astray mathematically. By the way, graph theory is really fun. Don't pass us the chance to study it!

Not enough examples

While I won't argue that the book is thorough and professional, I find it lacking enough examples to let me comprehensively understand the material. In many books, the author will introduce a concept and then give examples to cement the application of these concepts within the chapter text and/or figures. Chartrand and Lesniak use such examples very sparingly, and often for the more mundane concepts that need no additional illustration. In the first few chapters, where a great amount of terminology is introduced, these examples would have been extremely useful to ensure that the reader has a firm grasp on the basics. Instead, I found myself confused in later chapters because I had misunderstood one of the more fundamental concepts. I rarely, if ever, have this problem with a book includes sufficient examples.

While those more versed in graph theory might prefer a book with less example "fluff", someone just getting into the topic really should look elsewhere to ensure themselves a more stable and confident foundation.

Other signal processing experience includes MATLAB algorithm development and verification, and working with FPGA engineers to implement and validate signal processing algorithms in VHDL. Much of Mr. Cooper's experience involves software development for systems having hard real-time requirements and deeply embedded processors, where software reliability, performance, and latency are significant cost drivers. Such systems typically require innovative embedded instrumentation that collects performance data without competing for processing resources. Mr. Cooper holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Sciences and a Master's degree in Computer and Electronics Engineering from George Mason University.

Excellent Book with an Unfortunate Title

If you are looking for a book with page after page of esoteric DSP-related mathematical formulas then this book is not for you.

However if you are looking for simple, clear and well organized explanations related to a very difficult subject then read on!
Mr. Cooper does an excellent job of explaining both the mathematical and the engineering concepts with plenty of examples.

IMHO the title of the book should have been something along the lines of "FPGA and DSP Mathematical Applications: A Practical Guide and Tutorial"

Where was XLIFF when I needed it?

I remember the pain of pre-XLIFF days. I handed off my carefully formatted technical documents to a translation vendor, then I waited waited waited while the translators (working as fast as they could) extracted the text from my documents, put the English text into a form that translators could handle, sent that text out to be transformed into some number of languages, then forwarded all the translated text over to a desktop-publishing expert to reformat everything. Let's not even talk about what it took to translate the text inside graphics. Finally finally finally, the translated documents looked more or less like the originals.

Oh, the delays. Oh, the costs.

When XML came along into the lives of many technical writers, it took some of the inefficiency out of the formatting and reformatting. But it wasn't until XLIFF was developed—thanks to this book's authors, Bryan Schnabel, Rocolfo Raya, and JoAnn Hackos—that the translation part of the workflow could be truly automated.

I wish XLIFF had been around back when I was handing off my docs and then waiting, waiting, waiting...

Excellent Introductory Text

This text has provided me with an excellent grounding in the field of ecofeminism. The selection of essays included provide a nice range of the various ways ecofeminism is represented in the disciplines and used politically in society. The essays themselves are very clearly written and I found their bibliographies especially helpful in leading me to other more specific sources on the particular foci within this umbrella topic.

In particular, I really valued the inclusion of the following selections: Ecofeminism through an Anticolonial Framework (interesting critique of general feminism and a nice example of a politically motivated piece); Ecofeminist Literary Criticism (great bibliography and linkage to other theoretical pieces); and Androcentrism and Anthrpocentrism.

I would definitely recommend this text to anyone wanting an introductory overview of ecofeminism.

It contains a collection of essays by various authors on ecological problems and how those problems are linked to the oppression of minorities.It contains empirical data to back claims and provides a clear convincing argument for the movement.

The field studies in Part II of the book examine the degree to which reputation facilitates trust in online exchanges. Andreas Diekmann, Ben Jann, and David Wyder identify a “reputation premium” in mobile phone auctions, which not only drives future transactions between buyers and sellers but also payment modes and starting bids. Chris Snijders and Jeroen Weesie shift focus to the market for online programmers, where tough competition among programmers allows buyers to shop around. The book’s third section reveals how the quality and quantity of available information influences actual marketplace participants. Sonja Utz finds that even when unforeseen accidents hinder transactions—lost packages, computer crashes—the seller is still less likely to overcome repercussions from the negative feedback of dissatisfied buyers.

So much of our lives are becoming enmeshed with the Internet, where ordinary social cues and reputational networks that support trust in the real world simply don’t apply. eTrust breaks new ground by articulating the conditions under which trust can evolve and grow online, providing both theoretical and practical insights for anyone interested in how online relationships influence our decisions.

FUN FUN read!

This was FUN! So, my first intro to Jennifer Lewis was in the Love Is... anthology where I got to read about Gibran! And it was wonderful! SO I jumped at the chance for this short story when it came available on NetGalley!
You don't have to read the back stories of Osman and Sam and Veronica and Zadir to enjoy this story, but that would depend on you. I wish that I had. Only because their back stories is how they fell in love and this is their 'wedding' so it makes sense to read them first. Just my reading OCD LOL But now I have two wonderful stories to look forward to on my TBR list :)
This little short story is about Sam (American wife to King Osman) bringing to Ubar their first Christmas celebration. And let's just say Ubar is NOT ready for all that! LOL Mayhem run amok I tell ya! Really really fantastic read. We also have Veronica marrying her beloved Zadir and Sam wanting to basically re-marry Osman with her traditions.
This is really worth a read ... It's a crazy ride and you won't be able to stop yourself for loving everyone (almost) lol

This novella is book 2.5 in the Desert Kings series. You don't have to have read the others to enjoy it but the first book is currently available as a free download so is also worth checking out!

Sam Al Kilanjar is the American wife of the King, Osman Al Kilanjar, and is organising her first Christmas there which is to be celebrated by the wedding of her friend Veronica to Zadir, her brother-in-law. She is also going to be remarried herself as, although married according to Ubarite tradition, she has dreamed of having a more traditional wedding, too, with her parents present this time. Mistletoe, butterflies, goats, Veronica's estranged parents and over 300 guests turn Sam into Bridezilla/Christmaszilla! When sabotage occurs and her husband has to investigate, total mayhem seems to be the order of the day! Will things get sorted? Will the girls both have the weddings they'd dreamt of? What else could go wrong? You'll just have to read this festive season book to find out

This book is terrible. Grammatical errors and nonsensical sentences abound. The author has only a tenuous beginner's grasp of C; his 'explanation' of some basic concepts is flawed. As others have said, the 5-star reviews must be fraudulent. No sensible reader could admire this book. It's a shame, as a knowledge of C is very relevant even in today's OOP world.
