Chris Batha is one of the most highly qualified and most experienced shooting instructors and gunfitters in the world today. With over 30 years' experience in game and competitive clay shooting, he has shot game birds on three continents and in 14 countries. A book that's a keeper for the beginner and as valuable to the shooter as he/she advances

Rather late in my existence, I took up trap. A local club with three trap houses is within a short drive of the house. Although very modest in appearance, this club has outstanding results in state and national meets with their youth program. It welcomes all - kids, women, & men; its volunteer staff is wonderfully helpful to all. My first gun and I were a poor match. At the end of one Winter League, I won the toilet bowl trophy for the lowest score in eight weeks of shooting. "Keep trying" is emblazoned below the toilet bowl. I thought this was very funny, but I was determined to do better. So, I got a new-to-me used break open shotgun of a better fit and read every book I could on trap shooting for the beginner. When I came upon Breaking Clays, I found it full of useful information for the beginner. I checked it out repeatedly from the library before realizing I'd better buy the book. Which I did.. One of Batha's suggestions, for example, is to use a balance board regularly to train the brain. Moved by the power of suggestion, I bought a wobble board from Fitter First and have used it every day for seven months. This is but one of the many practical tips he
imparts. Have my scores improved? Yep. And I imagine they'll get better as I refine my technique. This book has worked for me. Even as I edge up to a more advanced level, it's a keeper. There's a lot more to learn from it.

Best shotgun instructional book

Excellent for an introduction to the shotgun sports, and also valuable for more advanced shooters. Great graphics, and enjoyable, easy to read and understand prose, really explain the technique to improve your shooting. Beautifully printed and edited, with just the right amount of info. By far the best of the dozen or so books I've read on this subject. I've given this as gifts to a handful of new shooters, and they've all loved it.

Comprehensive...but untested recipes.

This is the most comprehensive English-language Nepali cookbook available. It contains almost 500 pages and 300 recipes. If you want to know how to make a particular dish, the recipe will most likely be in this book. I am incredibly happy this book was published because I no longer have to bother my mom for her recipes. Most recipes also have a brief, but helpful commentary.

For those unfamiliar with Nepali cooking, there is also an ingredients/equipment section and a brief glossary.

Allowing for variations in cooking styles and tastes between individuals, I do have serious issues with the quantities listed in the recipes. Having made about a dozen dishes from this book, I am convinced that many of the recipes were not tested. I am an experienced cook and grew up on this food, so I was able to make the necessary adjustments. For instance, a dal recipe requires twice as much water as listed; some dishes are woefully undersalted; the maalpuwa requires more enrichment from milk and clarified butter, and the sel completely falls apart in the oil if the batter is made to the consistency of "heavy cream" as directed. Someone unfamiliar with the cuisine might require a few tries to get it right, or might end up with the wrong impression of how the dish is supposed to be.

Nepali cuisine is almost exclusively home cooking, and even the mistakes in the recipes exemplify this notion. The only measuring devices used are the eyes and the hands, and perhaps that is why some of the quantified amounts seem to be off. Still, I have to take off a star for this, as well for the lack of photos.

In the end, I still highly recommend this book, both to Nepalis and others interested in this cuisine. I am confident that you will find pleasure in one of the least known and healthiest cuisines in the world.

fantastic!

With several dozen cookbooks on our shelves, my wife and I are fairly critical of new additions. This one definitely passes with flying colors. Pathak has included the little details that make shopping, cooking and eating such a delight. Not only do you get Nepali recipes in exquisite detail (an extremely rare occurence in and of itself) but you come to learn much about the country, its people and its customs. I highly recommend this book to any foodie or otherwise.

A 'must' for any serious international cookbook collection

Finally, a cookbook devoted entirely to Nepalese cooking which offers a range of classic dishes adapted for American kitchens and equipment. History, discussions of Nepalese cuisine, and introductions to each dish which offer serving tips and insights - as in a Spicy Stuffed Eggs, compared to Deviled Eggs and advised to serve at room temperature by itself - makes for a cookbook clear in instruction and approach. No color photos - but the easy recipes don't need them. Access to a spices shouldn't be a problem either, as most - ground cumin, chopped cilantro, ground coriander and fresh ginger, for example, are readily available in American markets. Highly recommended: a 'must' for any serious international cookbook collection: there's simply nothing like it on the American market.

John Soane (1753-1837) was a difficult man, both personally and professionally; with what seemed to be sheer force of will and unyielding temperament, he surpassed his humble beginnings to advance in his career and social standing. Yet the philosophy of perception that imbued his reworkings of classical ideas and forms never materialized into a fully synthesized theory. In addition, many of his buildings have been demolished, leaving us with only watercolors by his assistant, John Gandy, to represent his work. Despite these challenges, Richardson and Stevens (Royal Acad. of Arts, London) have managed to organize the contents of the Soane Museum and essays from leaders in the study of Soane into a flowing and lavishly illustrated, seemingly comprehensive piece on the master. Soane is fully covered, from birth, through his lifelong work with the Royal Academy and his private and family difficulties, to his influence on later architects. Hinted at in the text are many possibilities for further research, making this a valuable tool for future scholars. This tour-de-force catalog for an exhibition at the Royal Academy is a smart choice for academic libraries or libraries specializing in art history or architecture.

About the Author
Gareth Porter is a consultant to the marine program at the World Resources Institute in Washington, D.C. He currently teaches at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at The John Hopkins University. Janet Welsh Brown was a long-time senior research associate at the World Resources Institute, former chair of the board of Friends of the Earth, and formerly the executive director of the Environmental Defense Fund. She has taught a variety of courses in international relations and environmental politics at the University of Washington in Seattle, the University of the District of Columbia, Howard University, and Sarah Lawrence College.

I have read them all and this is the best

Recently, I needed to learn a great deal about global environmental issues and global environmental politics in a short period of time. My assistant went and bought more than two dozen books - edited volumes, easy readers, detailed analyses, text books, etc. I surveyed them all and read most cover to cover. This is by far the best. It gave me the essential information in a very readable and well organized format. It was did not lecture but informed. I saw many far longer or more focused volumes but this one covered all the bases and was a pleasure to read. It is a little strange to recommend this type of book around the office but when people ask me, this is the one I point to.

The 2006 edition of this book is excellent. It is entirely new, clear, concise and informative. It has a new author and is so much better that the previous editions it should have a new title.

An absolute must-read for the beginning engineer or anyone who works in experimental physics (and I would guess other experimental fields in the sciences, if it involves developing instrumentation.) This book is well-written, with the perfect amount of detail and math to give you an understanding of the origin of the various sources of noise but no lengthy derivations. A perfect 'what you need to know' type of book, with enough detail for you to truly understand what you are learning.

Good textbook with a lot of interesting articles and illustrations.

I bought the 6th Ed because my teacher said it was basically the same as the 7th Ed. He was right... the book was almost identical to the 7th Ed book that others in my class were shelling out much more money for. The only difference b/w this and the 7th Ed that you'll notice is that some stuff is a page off.

Truely a magical journy !

This book offers a unique combination between the major arcana in the tarot cards, the 12 zodiac signs and the planets. It is amazing to see how the energies of the universe correlate to form a bigger picture than what I've known before. I have previous knowledge of the Tarot cards and basic astrology. I never thought they correlate that well, and through that book I discovered a whole new dimension and depth to tarot and astrology. I'd say this book is good for beginners as well, who want to get to learn the basics of tarot cards, the zodiac signs, the planets and houses. It offers a unique spread for tarot cards and very interesting interpretations. Whether you're familiar or not with tarot cards and astrology, this book can offer a great value and widen your horizons.

I am biased, as I am a fan of Ruth Aharoni, but I have found this to be an excellent inclusion into my detailed studies of both tarot and astrology, and would highly recommend to anyone who is keen to do the same.

I read Ruth Aharoni's previous excellent book on astrology - "Karmic Astrology: past lives, present loves", so I was glad to find her new book: "The Magical Combination of Tarot and Astrology". I surly got what I expected - an instructive well written inspiring book.

Lawrence Grossberg is the Morris Davis Distinguished Professor of Communications and Cultural Studies and director of the University Program in Cultural Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
