A Wonderfully Informative Book

I had the distinct pleasure of taking Congressional Politics with Professor Baker in the Spring of 2005. While reading this book is not quite as good as sitting in one of his lectures, it comes very close.

House and Senate is a remarkable look at the two distinct branches of the United States Congress. Baker discusses not only the differences between the two houses but the reasons that these differences exist. He relies not only on the accounts of Senators who used to serve as Representatives but on his own experiences working for members of both houses. Baker's extensive knowledge of the inner workings of Congress make him uniquely qualified to write this book.

Size matters

Baker makes one rather basic but essential point in his book discussing the differences between the two chambers of Congress: the small size of the Senate compared to the House makes it a distinct, more generalist, and more elite body. Journalists understand this, lobbyists understand this, and congressmen themselves understand this, argues Baker. His argument is convincing, even if he relies too heavily at times on senators who previously served in the House. Yes, these individuals are uniquely qualified to discuss the processes and the interaction of members, but are they not also pre-disposed to consider the Senate a more prestigious body? This is a minor quibble. In all, House and Senate will teach the reader about the distinctions between the two bodies. In doing so, it tells the layman much about how the legislative branch of government really works.

Baker has without doubt managed to make interesting what is without doubt not your everyday edge-of-the-seat topic of discussion.At the end of it all the House comes across as a school yard of near deliquents clamouring for press time while the Senate is presented as a bunch of somewhat ignorant attention stealing dont-push-my-buttons-or-i'll-filibuster-you miscreants.Baker's book manages-without the air of patronage that seems to surround authors of such books- to set out in a logical manner what makes each chamber tick.A true sprinkle on an otherwise dry subject matter.

Wasn't Satisfied

This book is more about how the author learned about and worked with self-hypnosis. It doesn't actually have well planned out steps to hypnotise yourself. It has a quick "how do ya do?" and then it goes back to the side-effects, the history of self-hypnosis, how they came to love hypnosis-I was looking for a step by step book on how to hypnotise yourself. This book didn't meet my standards. If you want a book on the history of hypnotising, or what happens when you do it wrong, or how a random author came to love hypnosis, heres a book for you!

A Classic Worth Having

This book has a special place in my heart because it's one of the books that got me interested in hypnosis and self hypnosis many years ago when books on this subject were scarce and hardly ever available in conventional bookstores.

While some of the material is dated, much of it stands the test of time. If it's basic information about self-hypnosis you want while staying on a budget(e.g. free on Kindle and 6.99 for the paperback), this is a great place to start. There is some practical "how to" in it; certainly enough to start experimenting.

Melvin Powers, for those of us old enough to know, put out a LOT of very interesting books and material through his press, Wilshire Book Company. His other books on hypnosis included Advanced Techniques of Hypnosis, and he's one of the few authors who mention the induction of hypnosis through the use of mesmerism (using the energy in one's gaze). It may sound like hooey to some folks, but I predict that one day it'll make a comeback. What's old will become new again--no doubt under a term someone creates to make it more palatable for a modern audience.

Melvin Powers has contributed to the current popularity of hypnosis and self hypnosis books. Of that, there is no doubt in my mind. If you are a collector of hypnosis books (like I am), then A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SELF HYPNOSIS is a must-have. It's a classic and for that reason, and a few others, I have given it FIVE STARS.

This book saved my life.

This book literally saved my life. Many years ago, I had a debilitating stuttering problem that was crushing my then nascent legal career. A psychiatrist, the late Dr. Frank S. Caprio, suggested that I study it and learn to hypnotize myself. I read Melvin Powers 130 or so page book and became excited. I then read it several more times. After that, I studied the "how to" chapters (Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, in particular), and I began to apply them diligently, practicing giving myself self-hypnosis treatments in 20 minute increments. I gave myself these treatments (1) before going to sleep at night, (2) before arising in the morning and (3) one or more times during the day, when I could get to a quite place. I was diligent. I became so good at "putting myself under" that I could do so (and did) while standing on a bus while holding the overhead hand-strap. I became able to put myself under for very specific time periods (20, 15, 10 or even just 5 minutes), and I would come out of hypnosis almost to the second of my targeted time. There are levels or degrees, of course, of hypnotic state. If "1" is normal consciousness and "10" is being total hypnotized, I probably reached a "7" or "8" at my peak, but I found ALL levels, even a 1 or 2, were beneficial. I cured 90% of my stuttering problem within months and I cured the rest of it slowly over a several year period. I haven't stuttered in decades. I continue to use self-hypnosis to manage depression, boredom, anxiety, memory-loss and it even helps with pain-suppression. I owe Melvin Powers an enormous debt of gratitude. Long before Amazon began selling this book, I used to buy dozens at a time from Mr. Powers company in California, and I gave them away to friends and family. I continue to do that. I even pay my grandkids to read this book. If you have any problems with your attitude and in controlling your feelings and thoughts, this book will teach you how to hypnotize yourself and handle those problems. As the psychiatrist who recommended this book to me said, "Hypnosis and self-hypnosis are not scary; hypnosis is nothing more than a heightened state of relaxation, and, when you're 'under', you are not in danger; you will always awaken to normal stimuli." Anyway, this book literally saved my legal career, by enabling me to conquer stuttering and continue to practice law, and that saved my life. It's short, sweet and user-friendly. Steve Jobs - Man Extraordinaire

Though written for a younger audience, Steve Jobs by Nick Hunter serves as a suitable introduction to the men, times, and institutions that built the first personal computers and shaped much of the electronics industry for 30 years.

Jobs was involved at many levels, both inside and outside Apple. After leaving Apple in 1985, he created a new computer box, NeXT. Where Apple succeeded beyond his wildest dreams ("he never needed to work again"), NeXT was a colossal failure. From NeXT he jumped into the movie industry, purchasing a small computer animation studio called the Graphics Group - which he later renamed Pixar. Pixar was sold to Disney in 2006 for $74 billion.

This was the beginning - ten years after leaving Apple, he would again become part of the Apple team. The iMac, the iPod, the iPad, and more, would follow, leaving former rivals in the dust.

Hunter's book also introduces us to Job's struggle to understand business. From Wall Street to building brand loyalty were all lessons that Jobs had to learn.

The book ends with a series of "Appendixes" that contribute to the books value - five characteristics that define the successful entrepreneur, a glossary that defines many of the formal terms used in the book, and an index to the people, ideas, and products discussed in the book.

The world lost a brilliant man on October 5, 2011, when Steve Jobs passed away. Nick Hunter has done a good job of introducing us to this man.

Concise, inspirational, informative - a good book for young children to learn about Steve Jobs. This book provides a brief overview of Steve Jobs life and achievements without going too much in detail. It provides a glimpse into his personality, the visionary that he was, his value for perfection and simplicity, and the inspiration he continues to be even after his death. NeXT, PIXAR, and APPLE itself are all included as part of his professional journey in the book. Nick Hunter lists Jobs' successes and failures as well as his strengths and weaknesses.
Snippets of interesting facts as well as quotes are highlighted in different colored boxes making the book visually pleasing along with the many photos included (many of which are Jobs').
Examples of the facts/quotes from the book:
"The bite was added so people would know it was an apple and not a tomato."
`"Do you want to sell sugar water all your life or do you want to change the world?" Jobs tries to persuade Pepsi's John Sculley to join Apple'
It includes a `Glossary' of words used in the book for the young reader (though I am sure most young readers nowadays are born knowing many of these words!), a helpful list of more books to read and websites to explore, and a section for the young entrepreneur with Steve Jobs' ideas on how to be one.

Disappointing

I love this series,but this book was very disappointing. The writing was choppy and didn't make sense in areas that you had to read it again to understand what happened. A n d the ending ........ all I have to say is "what the heck was that! "

I must agree with Mr. Kastner. I love this series, but I also found this one disappointing. The story did not flow as well as the others. The idea was good, but the execution could have been a little better.

Not Worth Reading - Or Spending Money On. . .

Adrian's Submission is the 4th book in the Quads of Alpha S Series. By the fourth book I expect more. More world building. More plot. More than a guy meeting up with his destined mates -- 80% sex and 20% story.

Adrian is straight. Yet by the end of this book he's begging for all four of his men and public sex. And that's all this story is as is the rest in this series - A human stranded on an alien planet and being 'claimed' by a group of men and brought into their lives as their sex slave. So then I wonder if these men have had sex with each other while waiting YEARS to complete their group.

Yes, by the 4th book I expect more. So we're finally getting a bit of a plot in protecting the Shadowlands and soliciting help from the other tribes and banding together. Is that plot executed? Sort of. The plan is in motion and the book ends. And what about the recovered space shuttle? Won't that be used to go back and forth safely and bring supplies? What about changing the humans so they'll be stronger and survive longer?

I'm very disappointed in how this series turned out. So much promise and it all fell flat. I'd advise not to invest in it - Not worth the money for the page space unless you like reading m/m/m/m/m sex. Lots of it. Oh yes and little plot. - Dan's Wife

Content is ok. Layout is terrible

I've only just started reading this. Its a rather odd format. There are short introductions, followed by a series of questions and worked out answers. Its ok, I guess, if not a bit unusual.

I really don't like the layout. There are no margins! This makes it uncomfortable to read. Your eyes just fall off the side of the page. There is at most one character width margin. More importantly, there is nowhere to make any notes. I like to scribble notes on technical books to help me learn / remember the material. I Can't do that with this book. I can only guess that the author/publisher was too cheap to use white space.

I give this book an F- on layout. If really needs to be in a larger format with margins.
