Content, perfect. Amazon's packaging, not so much.

The book, the art, the content - Flawless. I mean really, it's hard to believe one guy could deliver so much in one book. Its beautiful, and on the 3rd pass when you actually start to read the content, it's fantastically entertaining and in depth. The character profiles are well developed, and the artwork ties in perfectly. The quirkiness of the accessory information will have you laughing out loud.

I hesitate to write this, because Dan deserves to have the sales, so please understand that I am simply recommending not to get this book from Amazon:
Amazon's packaging, unfortunately, absolutely terrible. 2 of the corners on the hard cover book came smashed.
Book came laying flat in a box that was fit exactly to size in length and width, with 3 air bags placed on top. Having been on the pre-order waiting list for 3 months now, and waiting, this was very disappointing.

UPDATE:
Replacement by Amazon shipped with even less care. Same box, no air bags this time. Corners smashed, again, but not as badly so I am giving up.

The IMAX of artbooks

[[VIDEOID:mo1O98C6Z54A5NI]]When I first saw the book, I was like "Is this for real?". This book is huge! It's almost A3 size, and it's 272 pages thick. This is the IMAX of artbooks.

If you look closely at the cover, you'll see the actual killbook attached in chains to the belt of Gabriel, the protagonist that artist Dan Luvisi has created for his story.

Gabriel is a super soldier who was framed by a military corporation with global power. The story isn't really original, but it's still quite interesting to see this world that Gabriel lives in. With the help of a secret agent, he managed to escape the prison and is now back for revenge. This killbook collects all the bad guys on his hit list.

The book is presented as a scrapbook, with photos, artworks, documents and notes. The writing style is like snapshots from what Gabriel still can remember. Basically, there's no actual flow to the story. The book starts off with the introduction and background to the world, and then moves on immediately the the hit list, and ends with a gallery of concept art from children who still believe in the innocence of Gabriel.

While the writing isn't as good as it can be, the idea is fantastic. There are lots of bad guys with profiles and interesting analysis. Since the genre is sci-fi, you get characters that are not humans. There is a lot of content to read through and digest.

The last part of the book is quite creepy. It features fan art of Gabriel and other characters by children, fictitious of course, mostly under the age of 10. The artworks are look great, and there lies the creepiness because the kid's photos are shown beside their art. It's difficult to imagine young kids creating such accomplished pieces of work. Imagine a 5-year-old with an almost 3D painting of a muscular man-shark or shark-man with teeth that looks like it can bite through your neck like french fries. Interestingly, when you follow the websites of these kids, you'll be brought to the actual artists who created them.

This is a visually wonderful book and could be more awesome with better writing.

Art is amazing, but...

The art is amazing, definitely worth the price of the book. Butthe writing is definitely a big let down. Even starting with the year, 2666. 500 years in the future seems like a long time to still be having things like submachine guns. The scrapbook style is very interesting, so I can forgive the cliched bios of the characters. The editor, however, should be Gabriels next target. The book is filled with grammatical errors and extremely poor sentence structure, to the point that I had to take breaks out of frustration. There is endless potential in this story and these characters, and I fully understand and appreciate that this is the artists baby and he wants nurture it his way, but he would do Gabriel much more justice if he brought in a writer that shared his vision. Despite all that, you better believe I'm looking forward to whatever comes next for the last man standing.

My sides hurt from laughing so hard! This was the funniest story I think I've ever read

This was my first Ann McMan book, and I am ready to blow my entire paycheck on buying the rest of them. I laughed so hard while reading Bottle Rocket, I can't remember when anything (movie, book, conversation, etc) entertained me so well. Ann McMan has a true talent of writing comedy and I appreciated it while laughing at the restaurant, waiting for class to start, on the bus, and all those other places where people just ended up staring at me thinking I was a crazy laughing lady! This is the perfect story for any type of day you may be having- because it is going to put a smile on your face and a side stitch in your laughing muscles. It is one that you just can't help but laugh through.

Dr Rajkumar Buyya is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering and Director of the Grid Computing and Distributed Systems (GRIDS) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has pioneered the economic paradigm for utility-oriented distributed computing platforms such O16as Grids and Clouds, and served as foundation Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing. In recognition of these outstanding contributions, he received ‘2009 IEEE Medal for Excellence in Scalable Computing’. He has authored over 280 publications, which include best selling textbooks such as Mastering C++ (Tata McGraw-Hill, India, 2009) and edited books such as High Performance Cluster Computing (Prentice Hall, USA, 1999), Content Delivery Networks (Springer, Germany), and Market Oriented Grid and Utility Computing (Wiley Press, USA, 2009). He currently serves as the founding CEO of Manjrasoft Pvt Ltd., developing innovative software technologies for Grid and Cloud computing. Dr Thamarai S Selvi is a Professor and Head of the Department of Information Technology, MIT Campus, Anna University Chennai, India. She is also serving as Director of Centre for Advanced Computing Research and Education (CARE). She received Bharat Jyoti Award from India international Friendship Society in 2001. She has authored several research papers and books including A Textbook on C# (Pearson Education) and Testing your Skills in C (Tata McGraw-Hill). She has over 25 years of teaching experience and over 15 years of R&D experience. Her research interests include Semantic Grids, Trusted Cloud and Grid Computing. Mr Xingchen Chu is a Research Fellow in the Grid Computing and Distributed Systems (GRIDS) Laboratory, Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has over 9 years of experience with software architecture, design, and development on a variety of platforms, including J2EE and .NET. His R&D interests include enterprise applications and Grid and Cloud computing technologies. Along with Dr Buyya, he received Vice-Chancellor’s Knowledge Transfer Award from the University of Melbourne in 2007. Currently, he is involved in supporting the commercialisation of GRIDS Lab’s innovations via Manjrasoft.

Not the best but very good

It is well written but somehow i found this book is little weak.
Some part of books are just has no detailed explanation. Such as GUI programming, Socket Programming.
Also there are no sample codes (actually there is but not enough).

However, exercises of each chapter is very well. Force reader to re-think the chapter.

It is very good book for beginners and intermediate level programmers.

Yuan Kun Lee, PHD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the National University of Singapore, where he researches fermentation and microbe-host interactions and probiotics. Dr. Lee has written ninety journal papers, sixty conference proceedings, twenty-eight book chapters, and three books. He is also the holder of three patents.

Seppo Salminen, PHD, is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Food Chemistry at the University of Turku in Finland. He is also a Visiting Professor of Food Toxicology at RMIT University in Australia. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Salminen worked as a nutrition specialist, project manager, and toxicologist for private industry and government agencies. Dr. Salminen has written more than 240 refereed publications, several book chapters, and five books.

This new edition has been fully revised and updated to enhance its accessibility.  It focuses on the applications and concepts of group theory, rather than the detailed mathematics associated with the subject. The mathematical appendix has been written at an accessible level and character tables have been given a pictorial interpretation in order to offer a deeper insight into the nature of irreducible representations.

In this text, Dr. Kettle presents the most lucent introduction available for students wishing to attain an understanding of Group Theory for chemical applications. The text is not overly mathematical in its presentation, setting it apart from the numerous other texts available on this subject. After having read this text, a student is amply able to understand discussions of group theory with respect to spectroscopy or otherwise.

It's crap compared to Davison (which is out of print)

Okay so Davisons out of print but it's so much better (and called Group Theory For Chemists)! This book is a bit badly laid out, doesn't explain things very well and is pretty much useless unless you already have at least a simple grasp of Group Theory. I don't know what awful libraries you lot in Cleveland have but this is certainly not a particularly good book.

A book for NLP Practitioners

Being an NLP Practitioner I prefer having all possible techniques at my disposal. I have used a few of the techniques available in this book and they do work.

I you are an aspiring NLP Coach or have a keen interested in the field of NLP I want to suggest that you read this book.

Kindle Edition No table of contents - Beware

This review is not on the contents of the book, but the fact that the publisher chose not to include a ToC. The book is obviously meant as a reference and it seems unlikely anyone would want to search page by page for the topics included (my iPad says 14,239 pages on small font). I suggest the publisher fix this issue and that potential readers skip this until then. I will be more than happy to update the review when this gets fixed, as I really wanted to be reading the book instead of writing a negative review.
