The student movement would be of fundamental importance in the shaping of the future Ethiopia, instrumental in both its political and social development. Bahru Zewde, himself one of the students involved in the uprising, draws on interviews with former student leaders and activists, as well as documentary sources, to describe the steady radicalisation of the movement, characterised particularly after 1965 by annual demonstrations against the regime and culminating in the ascendancy of Marxism-Leninism by the early 1970s. Almost in tandem with the global student movement, the year 1969 marked the climax of student opposition to the imperial regime, both at home and abroad. It was also in that year that students broached what came to be famously known as the "national question", ultimately resulting in the adoption in 1971of the Leninist/Stalinist principle of self-determination up to and including secession. On the eve of the revolution, the student movement abroad split into two rival factions; a split that was ultimately to lead to the liquidation of both and the consolidation of military dictatorship as well as the emergence of the ethno-nationalist agenda as the only viable alternative to the military regime. Bahru Zewde is Emeritus Professor of History at Addis Ababa University and Vice President of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. He has authored many books and articles, notably A History of Modern Ethiopia, 1855-1974 and Pioneers of Change in Ethiopia: The Reformist Intellectuals of the Early Twentieth Century. thoughtful and well written

This book is a must read to understand the struggle for change in Ethiopia that was part of the global wave of the 1960s and 70s carried over by young people in virtually all regions of the world. Bahru Zewde writes history with such prose and skill, it reads like a novel - a page turner. It will, no doubt be especially enjoyable by those who were young (and active) during the 1960s, leading up overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie and the subsequent political turmoil of the Derg regime.

Sonny Barger's Flawed Philosophy

I read it in a single day, a rarity for me. Couldn't put it down. Barger's honest and open telling of his own worldview and the detailed sketch of the culture of HAMC, along with the complete lack of apology, make it really compelling.
But he is a criminal, and the con in this book is the statement near the beginnning, to the effect of: "All I ever wanted to do was ride and be free." He proceeds to prove, through the rest of the book, that that is merely a justification for his lifestyle and (possibly) plea for fame and respect in the valuable cultural currency of 'freedom from oppresive powers' (he already has plenty of fame and respect on his own terms), but its not true. Barger likes to pick fights, bother innocent workaday people and locals, and be the center of attention wherever he goes. His quest for freedom required the abrogation of everyone else's freedom, not just the police and rival clubs as he seems to want you to believe.
"Hell's Angel" is most interesting, for me, in the depiction of his dynamic leadership and the need, so often suppressed, for men to band together and be unified in something. I envy him the brotherhood he founded and don't begrudge them the right to defend it's name, by violence if necessary, against fools who want to challenge it or steal it. But I don't believe for a moment that he wants to live and let live. He and his club steal, con, and completely disregard the wishes of the citizen's of any community they enter; in reality, it's power that they want, not freedom. Just admit that, and this account would be balanced. Its already very entertaining and valuable cultural history.

Pretty much a straight-up biographical rendering of Barger's life and times. He certainly exposed himself to many things considered to be criminal in our world. But he apparently found enjoyment beyond just the thrill of two wheels on the road....all the other club stuff is what helped him spend time behind bars.

Definitely Helped My Skiing

I liked his idea very much, but didn't think the format was great for a book. Specifically, he has many drills with lots of diagrams, where a subsequent drill will be just slightly different than the previous one. IMO what works best for books is to limit the diagrams and use words to describe what you want done (admittedly difficult for sporting activities). I think the author actually did a good job describing what he wanted done, so my comment would be that the book could have been more concise, or, if you're like me, there may be parts you want to skip over.

But this is a minor point; just explaining why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. For an instructional book, the primary thing I'm looking for is ideas to help me improve, and the author provided that, so I'm very glad I purchased it. It is not very expensive (Kindle edition), so that is also a positive.

...the Harb PMTS is the way to go. I've skied for years with incremental improvement only until finding the PMTS system. Simple and sensible, you can truly breakthrough to advanced skiing techniques in a half day. Highly recommend this book and "Expert 2" as its complement.

A limited reference

This book has a very short description of each card's divinitory meaning and an even shorter description of the card reversed. This brevity is appealing to a person who wants to begin reading cards immediately, however it has the drawback of giving limited interpretations which can lead to inaccuracy in some circumstances. It also makes memorizing the meanings very difficult, since it does not tie the meaning in with the pictoral representation of the card. In its favor, at least it does mention the reversed cards, which not all references do. It also has a short glossery of the symbolism used in cards. All in all, though, for any beginner who really wants to learn the tarot, I'd say Joan Bunning's book is 10 times better than this.

Without getting too esoteric the material is well written though at times one is wanting more in the way of symbolic definitions.
